I want to change the door handles to black to match the side vents and grill (2005-2006)
do I have to change the whole door handle

I think I saw some gloss black ones on ebay. Probably covers, so what you want

do you know if they look any good ie look like they were the originals or just cheap covers

Don't know. Mine came with chrome covers which look and feal good.

So worth trying covers

fitted some of the covers on mine, 20 min job really easy
They are only covers on the outside of the existing handle fixed with silicon sealant, downside is when you stand at the door you can still see some of the grey handle on the inside of the door pull, but you have to be looking.

Check the type you need, there are 2,those that stick over and the later model type which unclip and clip actually into the handle I believe.

I got the covers. 5 min job putting them on top of the grey. You can see the grey if you look hard enough, but for the minimal amount of effort required I am happy with the result.

Not sure why I should need to buy additional covers to replace my current door pulls

I see a few have had these painted anybody had theirs wrapped ..I did this on my old 7 series BMW replacing the old gentlemans club wood trim look which I hated..

Not everybody's taste of course quick cheap fix in a large range of colours & effects

Yep done all mine in red carbon fibre textured vinyl,

Not every ones taste but I like it and it suits the car, easily removed as well

Also looking at the Grey Carbon fibre option brought a few samples of different types to try & as you say easy to remove.

Look forward to seeing how you get on with the hydro dipping
