Differential

Hi All!

I have a 55 plate 2.7 with what sounds like a wheel bearing noise when coasting. I have had the wheel bearings changed so I am assuming its nothing to do with them and been informed it could be the diff.

Does anybody know the cost or can recommend anyone cheap (South East / London) based to repair / replace it?

If its a big bill il just run it til it smashes to pieces all over the road! Confused

Thanks!!

Hi

Try to determine if it is the diff or not before jumping as garages will take advantage of that

On the other hand you could just change the diff oils its pretty easy to do and should be quite cheap in labour (have seen it done on youtube, doesnt look hard for a garage to do) - This would be good for the car, your service history aswell and also eliminate if the diff is whining or not perhaps?

Weird noises like that could be tyres too, over or under inflated or worn also plastics or guards (brakes) rubbing
Even the alternator bearings could be doing that or the sepentine belt that runs on the alternator

I have a similar weird squeel when turning tight corners at over 10mph only Neutral

If it fails and locks the front wheels you'll heading straight to the scene of the accident!

A new diff is pricey and is a bit of work to replace I think. The bearings can be replaced but you need to remove the diff to do it (I guess). Either way it's not going to be a two hundred quid job.

As mentioned, change the oil and see what's on the plug. Lots of swarf might point to more work required. Don't forget to remove/loosen the filler plug before removing the drain plug just in case it's seized. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
