Gear hesitancy

Hi All,

Was looking at buying the 4.4 but I see the 2014 3.0 is only .3 seconds slower which makes it an all round winner IMO.

Anyone comment if they still suffer from the junction roulette? where you slow down at e.g a junction see a gap place foot on throttle then nothing happens for a split second almost as if no gear engaged then wham it takes off again.

Still happens.

However, I am developing a theory that it varies from car to car, and that variation might be caused by the brake light switch, which, contrary to what you might think, does a great deal more than simply switch on the brake lights.

This theory came about as a result of the variance I saw between different examples of the Jag XFs I had and tried. which use exactly the same engine and gearbox (different software I know). Also people in the Jag world who have replaced or adjusted their brake light switches have gone on to report a variance on this "re-applied throttle delay".

It was so bad on one XF I had that I started left foot braking, using the right foot to keep the throttle cracked open so that the car would actually pull out into a gap in the traffic without giving me a heart attack.

My own Sport (MY16) isn't bad, the loaner I have right now (MY14) is far worse. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Interesting, but I was told it doesn't exist on the Petrol variants, they must use the same switch. is that true, petrol version font have the issue?

My 3.0 has it exactly as you describe it. Havent tried the other models either but ive also read the petrol doesn't have it but haven't tried one myself so cant comment real world.

If you drive the 3.0 in dynamic sport it doesn't do it though so I think its a lazy gearbox or how its setup for smoothness that causes it so many computers but still not perfect.

A good point, well made.

All I can say is that the hesitancy seems to vary before/after a brake light switch swap form reports I have seen on the Jag forums..

On my first Jag, if you touched the brake at the same time as being on the throttle, it immediately chopped the throttle totally. The second didn't do this, at least not immediately. This could be software I guess.

I can only compare the two Sports I have driven extensively to date - my own and the current loaner - and they vary to a great degree in terms of this "reapplied throttle hesitancy".

All the JLR petrol cars I have driven have been supercharged, and they have had exemplary throttle response, in fact so good my next car definitely won't be diesel as I am fed up with "driving around" this "characteristic". MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Could the difference between the petrol and the diesel be down to the Supercharger blowing all the time and the turbo needing some time to spool up? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Almost certainly.

I drove both XK and XKR, the throttle response was brilliant in both. I actually preferred the n/a XK, it was a "sweeter" drive, and with 385bhp, quite quick enough.

Anyway, back to Range Rovers.,............. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.
