Harsh Ride

So my 05 Sport has a rather harsh ride it seems. Could my air suspension need changing. Its done 140K miles and i don't think the air suspension has even been changed. Is this a part that could wear out? Any other suggestions why the ride is hard? Thanks.

I think the sport models all have a fairly harsh ride, although it will be far worse if you have silly 21" or 22" wheels on!
Dropping down to 19" or 18" even will improve things. I swapped the standard 20's on mine for 19's and it feels a little more refined- not a massive difference, but certainly noticeable.
Air suspension should be fine if it's working correctly, don't think it stiffens up over time, unless it's full of water Wink

As said above, what size wheels are you running Question
20" is the norm for the later RRS1 models (2010+) with the earlier ones 19" from the factory.

Has it had any amendment to the suspension settings to set it at a lower running height? Had links fitted, both these will affect the ride quality.

21" and 22" will significantly affect the ride quality too, though there are some that are happy with them Smile ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

It's not really the diameter of the Wheel Rim it's more to do with Tyre Profile and flexibility of the side wall surely, I run 45 profile on a 21" rim and it is a better ride than the original 20" with 40 profile tyre.

Cheers

I've got 22" alloys but have 305 40 22 tyres. So there's a lot of rubber to soften the ride. So out of curiosity, what's the life span of an air suspension bag? And are we all definitely sure that changing those won't better the ride?

Yes, but that's not a lot of rubber, considering the weight of the car. I'd say that's a contributing factor to be honest. ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Sizes of wheel and tyres that are not available on model when new, would have to be notified to your insurance company as a modification. Some insurance companies are ok but others can charge £200-£400 extra per year for just having large wheels etc, be careful out there, don't want to find you are driving illegally without insurance in the event of a accident.
I'm sure our members would be on top of modifications and notifications, but just in case. Embarassed John

I am having the same issue. Very harsh ride. On completely flat motorway surfaces, it's absolutely lovely. Get on a rough surface and there's loads of tyre noise and the ride is jittery and crashy.

Rovertune have checked and claim car is ok. I am not convinced, but I am starting to think I may be imagining it, but I don't remember the ride being so bad before the prop shaft went - before that, I loved it.

Interestingly, the suspension had trouble going from access to normal mode today. The back was fine, but the front took ages. Can this cause issues with ride? Am also suspecting that maybe my tyres are not great despite having plenty of tread.
Any thoughts and anyone with the same issues?

Cheers,

On a 2005, I'd be more worried about the life of the steering rack with 22in rims... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Im quiet certain its my air suspension. Surely after 10 years it must need changing, constantly going up and down all its life. But i also appreciate that my 22inch Straight outta Compton rims are probably not the best choice for comfort. But they look so good. Either way, when i get enough funds together, ill change all 4 suspension bags and see how that feels.

Out of curiosity, has anyone every changed their suspension and did they notice a difference?

Has it always had these wheel on, yo might think that's a lot of rubber but 40 profile isn't. It's poss that the shockers are getting abit weak but to find out it's going to cost about £2000. Think I'd try a set of 19 inch rims and tyres first, do you know anybody you could swap a set with just to try... 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current
