United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Alaska White
Warranty

Hi

Just purchased a RRS 58 plate HSE which comes with 3 months warranty included by Autoprotect.

Just a couple of questions:

-Is it worth purchasing extended warranty?
-Who best to get it from?
-What is the going rate?

Sorry for all the questions but a newbie to all this! Shocked

Yip I would get warranty as repair costs can be high if things go wrong.

Warranty Direct cost about £880 per year and there a lot of good and bad reports about them, you need to check what is covered as with all warranty.

I went with AA Gold £999 for 2 years as as yet I have not had to use them so can not say if they are good or bad.

I took a warranty wise out for 2 years about £1300 I think, if you do the quote online and leave it they will keep coming back to you with better offers, only had to claim once for a wheel bearing and they paid apart from the excess of course but the excess is voluntary. Nanocom Evo

Don't be fooled by these 3 month warranties dealers give you, its more for them than you. They have to repair any problems within the first 6 months unless they can undoubtedly prove that the fault wasn't there at the point of sale. Which is nigh on impossible for them to do.

I'm a relative newcomer to the RRS fraternity and asking is it really cost effective getting a warranty? Over an ownership period of say 4 years, is the typical repair cost really going to exceed £4k because that's what you're shelling out for the warranty. Also bear in mind the inevitable exclusions that apply which you're paying for in addition to the warranty. Had mine for 6 months now (MY06), done 4k miles trouble-free so am I riding my luck without one?

They're not that bad, surely. Advice welcomed.

It is a gamble, as with all insurance policies. If you can afford the repair cost and have the cash available, and are a "glass half full" type, then you don't need insurance. On the other hand, if it would ruin you if you were hit by a large repair bill and/or you are a "glass half empty" type then the reassurance these policies buy is well worth the risk of the money going into a big dark pit.

However, one thing to consider is that they collect more than they pay out (they would soon be out of business if they didn't) and to protect this position they impose all manner of "get out" clauses, so at the end of the day there is inevitably only going to be one winner.

Junior, it definitely is worth covering in some way. I have had mine a year and got 3yrs at a discounted rate. So far it's paid out2 grand in 11 months.

They are complex beasts and lots of jobs can cost 1k plus. I have mine through car care plan, and so far they have coughed up without hesitation.

That said, many cars will be trouble free. I hoped mine would be, but wanted the piece of mind if it wasn't..... 2010 TDV8

I had LR's Extended Warranty for four years. It paid out more than it cost every year. Highlights included rear diff, rear ARB, turbos, starter motors, alternators, steering rack and lower column, compressor. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Just to add. My car is the best car I have owned. It is also the most frustrating as when buying older things will get tired. Go in with a half decent warranty and an expectation of a few days off the road for repairs, and you will be fine. If you want bullet proof reliability, as much as it pains me to say look elsewhere.... 2010 TDV8

definitely worth checking the exclusions i'd say. i know when i've spoken to warranty direct about things i hoped might be covered (air con and ARB's for instance) they weren't covered.

That said i got a good deal 17 months cover for around £800. Shame i've not been able to use it Wink

I'm in a real dilemma over it...

Just bought an 06 4.4 V8 and the previous owner has Extended Warranty with LR called Select Extended Warranty, it's £77 a month, June is paid for, but need to decide sharpish whether to carry over...

My worry is that given the age of the car, if anything goes, am I going to have a major ball ache arguing whether anything that goes wrong is age related etc??

Thanks for the replies and advice guys (I love this site) Thumbs Up

I'm in the same boat as uu_26 regarding age of car. I suspect there will be so many exclusions due to age-related wear and tear that I will never get value from a warranty. I'll take the gamble on warranty "savings" paying for major repairs and also accept that wear and tear costs will be higher for a vehicle of my age.

However, 6 months and £0 cost so far. I'll keep the tally updated.
