Starter motor fault

Hi all,

So day 4 into the ownership of my rrs and got to my car and...CLICK! the starter motor solenoid didnt seem to be engaging, car was in access height so couldnt get to it but luckily I could get hold of a jack, drift and hammer, a couple of knocks and it started up.
Is this a common fault? Should I get a new one and replace it? Had a quick look on ebay and they seem to cost about £150.

Thanks

As long as 4 days? Nice one Rolling with laughter glad you got it sorted though. Just FYI as you're in the Oxfordshire area, as am I, James French in Standlake seems to be a LR specialist people speak highly of.

Haha yep not even a week, must be a record!
Is that stand lake garage? I'll be able to do a starter motor myself, think it's just a bit fiddly due to where it's located but thanks for the recommendation:)

It'll be James French you're looking for. Standlake garage is probably the other one down the road. Mine was back in the workshop twice within a week Smile fine now though thankfully.

Surely if you've only had it a week you would get the seller to replace it with a new one !?

Unless you bought it privately you've got a warranty.

Thank you socast, I did not know this, I only thought the car would only have warranty if it was added when bought.

Luckily it was motor company and not private.

Thanks

The garage I bought mine from took the car in twice in the first 7 days and sorted everything out free of charge. Courtesy car free of charge as well. Good job you didn't buy private Smile You get a warranty as standard but you can buy extra ones with better cover over a longer term.

Up to you really. I first took mine back as I couldn't lower into access mode. I tested it as working on the test drive, but they replaced the front ARB bushes before I picked it up. One of the height sensors was knocked, I think, which caused the access level fault. The replaced that, gave it a full 4x4 recalibration, all good.

Then a new fault appeared about 3 days later after I went over a pot hole. Lost special programs and high/low drive settings. They took it back in, fixed the ACE rail and some wiring. All good again. No questions asked at all.

Hopefully you'll have a similar experience Smile Where did you get yours, out of interest? I was searching the oxford area for RRS for a while and might have seen it up for sale at some point.

How does it drive other than the starter fault? Quick?

Apart from the starter fault that came up, the other faults arent big, more annoying than anything like the passenger wing mirror has a fault (ive posted a thread about it but no answer yet) it doesnt adjust on the drivers mirror control but it tilts when in reverse dip mode, better explained in the thread, there is a Cv boot which has a small cut in it which I noticed when looking at the car on the forcourt and they said to just get it booked in with them and they'll sort it out foc which was good of them.
I ended getting mine from a place near northampton, called Nene vale motor company, I emailed them earlier and they replied saying they had recieved my email and will get back to me shortly, still not heard back, will contact them in the morning if I havent heard back by then.
Its quick for a heavy car, havent properly driven it with my foot planted as Ive had either my boy or the other half in the car everytime ive driven it, ive also posted a thread asking about remapping a 4.4 petrol.

CV boot is an MOT fail, if they gave you a 12 month ticket when you bought the car then they obviously cant lay straight in bed. That needs doing sooner rather than later as a dry cv joint can make a mess at worst and cause premature wear at best.

The mirror could well just be that the switch is faulty but regardless its a component on the car that should work.

Check the headlight washers too (turn your lights onto main beam and wash the windscreen, not sure how many times after the initial wash before they squirt again, but the always squirt first time when you first turn on your lights)

Shift the gearbox into low range with the door open, it should be pretty much silent, if not then it could be an expensive bill.

find yourself a steep hill, manually select 4th/5th and plant your foot, it should pull smoothly, if not it could be your torque converter.. again an expensive bill.

Apply the park brake and listen for it 'chirping' or clacking, should whir for a second or less then a bit of a creak as the pads seat on the drums, if not get them to re-adjust the EPB as a new module is £700.

Also while it's with them ask them to update the software on the engine and gearbox, that'll save you £120 if you get it done yourself.
