Just put my 20" summer wheels back on and feel the 275/40/20 tyres look poor after the 255/50/19's. Was thinking of moving to 45 sidewalls... any recommendations? ____________________

I was running 275/45 x20 Michelin Latitude Sport 3 tyre before changing to 21" Rims, quietest tyre I've ever used, pure summer only tyre though. Have run 45 profile on Sports for last five years, no issues and better ride than the 40's fills the arch better as well.

I have run 45s on a grabber A/T for well over a year, much more comfortable than the 40's that came off.

I took my 19 inch winters off running 255/55/19s and I must say I do miss the comfort and extra sidewall and was thinking of going back to them full time and ditching the 20s  2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

I really do think the ride is a lot smoother on the 255/55/19s Rob, and fills the arches a treat. Seems to glide over the excuses of roads we have in Hampshire!

My plan was to put Goodyear Duratracs on the 19s for on and offroad and sell my winter tyres on. I was intending putting Duratracs on my RRS but having had difficulty in sourcing I emailed Goodyear who told me that they no longer market the Duratrac in the UK. You can find them but it put me off as obtaining a replacement in time to come could be a real problem. Will fit General Grabbers AT which are widely available.

19's are the future, I'm totally convinced after running 19's and 20's.
Smoother and take the bumps and holes much better. Now sold 2010 TDV8 Santorini black, lots of extras and best car I ever owned, and there's been a few. I will be back.

It's not do much a 19" or 20" question for many if for a more comfortable/softer ride, I feel it's the profile of the tyres, 40 is just to small, you require 45/50 or even 55 as long as they fit correctly, and your insurers know.
Admittedly with 19" tyres they do come with better profile such as 50 as standard, but do to me look a bit lost in the space, more so if set to highest height for Water and some off road situations.

Incidently, if the tyre size/wheel size has been made available as a standard/option availability for the vehicle you have, then technically it isn't a modification for insurance purposes, as so many sizes combinations are available, it's when you fit outside the normal availability that it has to be declared or you add spacers etc. John

20s on 275/45/20 General Grabbers just don't have enough sidewall. My car gets used offroad very regularly and I've now ripped 2 sidewalls and had to replace General Grabbers due to Flint or rocks.

That's why I'm going 19s on 255/55/19 Duratrac as the extra sidewall offers better protection and a better ride too  2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

What do looks matter when you're off road? Indeed, how does wheel/tyre looks matter snyway? The only time they're visible is when it's parked up; the only people who see them are those walking by in the car park.

As for arch filling, I run 255/55/19 and can tell you that they physically fill the arches better than the usual rubber bands on 22s ever do. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
