Observations from my driving holiday to Bavaria

Car has now done 8000 miles since end of March, 3000 miles in the last 2 weeks:- here are my observations of the cars performance and other observations:

Avge mpg for whole journey 27.8.

Very comfortable, I normally have to stop and stretch every hour since I've got a bad back, not in this car.

Top speed reached on Autobahn of 115 mph, noticeable 'light shudder' thru 110mph which I guess was the suspension lowering. Stability excellent at that speed.

Zig Zag mountain roads used command shift to hold in gear for longer, I took this tip from an LR off road day- ie to use command shift as an intelligent supplement to normal driving, the autobox+weight combo of the car places huge pressure on the box and thus command shift takes the pressure off and prevents that burn't out gearbox smell I had in the Lake District.

Since it rained for 50% of the time I've now got rust on most of the wheel nuts (something to watch out for this Winter folks). Dealer to resolve.

Seat wear- on the drivers front seat base there is a T shaped seam in the middle of the edge of the seat by the door, the surface of the finished leather is bearing back to the underlying suede leather (which if you dampen turns dark grey - looks great with Alpacca !! whilst the underlying cushion is also getting rucked (i'll get a photo when poss). Dealer inspect this Saturday . Any other SE drivers noticing this, or HSE for that matter.

I've got LR fitted rear seat waterproof covers and in certain places the rubberised grey backing has transfered a light grey mottling onto the leather seats (I'm aware now of others having issues with this). I've not attempted to remove it though can understand why normal seat cleaning chems can't remove it if its rubber. Dealer to inspect this Saturday .

The rubber trim that surrounds the triangular window of the passenger side rear door is aging, ie surface beginning to break down and lightly crack. Dealer to inspect this Saturday .

Checking oil level, its a bl##dy nightmare trying to read the dip stick since the wire thing is in so tight it gathers oil from the sleeve it sits in.

The wife has come back wanting me to get Sat Nav fitted as per the HSE in the centre of the dash, so any ideas about what options I have would be useful. I currently have a Mio that happily sticks onto the windscreen.

All in All the engineering performed brilliantly, saw only 2 other sports in France and Germany, loads of admiring looks (as always) ... just a couple of cosmetic issues that I should get resolved on Saturday. P400e HSE Portofino Blue and Ivory Seats.. it's like a yacht!!

Sorry Angel, I was thinking of you though ! , however I was pre-occupied with dodging torrential rain. Lovely country side, favourite spot was the Spitzingsee Alpine lake. We were based on a farm in Hundham, east of Bad Tolz. I did drive past Stuttgart at 2mph in a 10km traffic jam - So many roadworks in Germany, I thought the roads were pretty poor I'm sorry to say and was quite glad to get to the French highways. P400e HSE Portofino Blue and Ivory Seats.. it's like a yacht!!

BG, you obviously had a grand time and the car worked well. I have roughly the same delivery, usage, mileage on long trips etc as yours, largely as a result of meandering around Europe.
Just finished a 2000 mile trip Lux-Ischgl, Austria-London. Took Tshirt, bermudas mufti to the Alps and it snowed on me there.Shocked
Thanks for the observation on the command shift-which of course is there to be used but I have so far contrived to ignore it completely. And going up the Silvretta pass that burning smell you talk about was distinct even though I did have the sense to shift into lo gear mode. Now I know better. RRS 2.7TDV6 HSE Java Black, Sun Roof, Tasmod Sills

Maybe this chap did though Confused

As taken from this years DARWIN AWARDS 2006

Overzealous zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt (Paderborn, Germany) fed his
constipated elephant Stefan 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a
bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged-up pachyderm
finally let it fly, and suffocated the keeper under 200 pounds of poop!
Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the
ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded on
him. "The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked
Mr.Riesfeldt to the ground, where he struck his head on a rock and lay
unconscious as the elephant continued to evacuate his bowels on top of
him" said flabbergasted Paderborn police detective Erik Dern. With no
one there to help him, he lay under all that dung for at least an hour
before a watchman came along, and during that time he suffocated. It
seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves that "Sh it
happens!"

Shocked
