I don't know who your dealer is but he talks crap, yes it is illegal to have different size tyres on the same axle but not Front to Rear. Some BMW's, Merc's etc. actually come from the factory with different size Wheels/Tyres as I believe do some Porsche. It would be advisable to talk to one's insurance company if anyone were to change size to make sure the Insurance would be valid. I actually have a completely different size wheel and tyre from the original standard L/R one's and my own insurance company is more than happy. It has also been serviced and MOT'd by a Main Dealer and it has never been a issue. There is a possibility it could be a problem with Warranty as a get out jail free card for them, but I keep a spare set of Standard Wheels for this eventuality.

The RRS (as well as all other 4WD cars with 50/50 torque split) need to have all four tyres of same size.

Of course this rule does not apply if you are happy with ESP getting weird, ABS acting on its own, centre diff wearing out prematurely, gearbox problems, Terrain Response unable to work properly etc. Regards etc.,

You're absolutely right, Andy - that was my simplification, of course it's about the circumference, which I've simply put as "size".

On the other hand, AFAIR the X5 has 47/53 F-R torque split. Regards etc.,

N1ckC - how did you get on with the profile swap to 45s pls?

I have been running 275 45 20 General GT on my facelift 2012 RRS for 4 years now.
No issues at all. Ride MUCH improved over previous 40 profile.
Dealer serviced, no comments on tire size.
Speedo is dead on with SatNav and those no penalty speed warnings on the road that show your speed and tell you to slow down.
No tickets when I lock it in cruise control at speed limit on roads monitored by average speed cameras.

I have found this to be true for both RRS and Disco 4 stock tyre sizes.....the speedo reads 2-3 mph over your actual speed on the factory fit size (you are actually 2-3 mph slower than speedo says).
The increase in sidewall height from 40 to 45 makes the speedo read true. 12MY RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux Sumatra / Black + contrast/ Grand Black

Any further thoughts on 275/45/20's chaps? Any recommendations? Hankook seem to have good write ups.

Pompey, if it helps I've just had a set of 4 Nexen Roadian HP fitted in 275/45 R20. so far really quite impressed for a mid range tyre.

The day after fitting it absolutely hoofed it down with rain and they performed without fault, and unlike some people suggested I didn't end up in ditch in a ball flames wishing I'd bought a set continentals or the like at more than double the price.Seem to have very good grip in the dry too and fellow passengers have commented on how quiet they are compared to the previous mix of Landsail on the rears and Davanti on the front (fitted by the previous owner I might add).

I was torn between the Hankook Ventus ST and the Nexen Roadian, both are M+S rated too, but after getting quotes on both the Nexen came in cheaper in the size.

I went for them after reading a whole host of reviews over the preceding weeks must to my wife's dismay

can't comment on wear as only done about 200mls so far but other reviews seem to suggest around 20,000+ is easily achievable but only time will tell.

have to say that the ride also seems a little less harsh and the speedo is spot on with a GPS check.

Eskimo,the Nexens are a very good mid range tyre,I had them on my Amarok in 295/45r20 & I never had problems with them in the wet,if they made them in 295/40r22 I would definitely have a set on my RRS as the contis I have on now are really noisy Andy.
