Can I tow a twin axle caravan on a DETACHABLE towbar?

I have just bought a RRS 2013 plate HSE with a view to towing a 6 berth twin axle caravan. (Previously towed on an X5 using a detachable tow bar) The car did not come with the tow bar which has led me into looking at getting one sorted out this week only to come across numerous tales of woe regarding a fault on tow bars on RRS's leading to Land Rover recalling cars between 2005 and 2015. The car has an autobiography kit on and any kind of permanent fixture is going to look hideous but is there no other option?

You can tow a big tin tent, many people do. Just as with any towing, you need to keep an eye on the tow bar and makes sure you look after it. Take it out when not being used, keep it and the receiver clean etc. If you're worried, buy a LR tow ball and then get your dealer to carry out the receall check on it. At least then you'll have an idea as to the state of your receiver to begin with. To be honest, if it's been lightly used in the past then it's probably ok. For towing two or three times a year, the removable ball is fine - that's what it's intended to do. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

LR are checking existing towballs for wear and replacing if worn so if you're concerned get a dealer to do yours as RRSTDV8 says Cool

I never left mine fitted when not use as I believe weather and theft are a concern Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Consider buying a brand new one though and not one on eBay that was left permanently on a vehicle / used for heavy towing which led to wear in the receiver.
Cheaper than from a LR main dealer:

If you buy second hand and see dealer on recall they'll replace it if worn provided you're smart Whistle Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Would confirm yes. We tow a Swift Elegance 645 behind our RRS. No problems with the detachable lowball. Just take it out when not being used. Use the red plastic plug for the RRS latching point to stop dirt etc going in when not in use. Make sure that you clean the towing head with brake cleaner on a regular basis to save contamination of the friction pads on the caravan. Our detachable tow bar was checked and lubricated by the dealer at the last service. 2015 Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic SDV6
