Test Drove an X5

OK, so decided to see what all the fuss is about and took out a new X5 3.0D Sport today. First impressions were that it seems much smaller on the inside than it does on the outside. You don't feel that you're in a 4WD.

The seats are not very sculpted despite being the sports seats (I thought) I was a bit disappointed that they were so flat. The rear seat is literally a bench seat, completely flat. There was enough room for me to sit behind my front seat though, so there's lots of room for adults and kids alike. The boot is also smaller than I thought it would be. The steering wheel is small and chunky, has a nice feel to it and all controls are typical BMW.Solid.

Driving wise - you don't feel the sense of occasion that you do in the RRS, you're not sitting in the cockpit and as a result you feel slightly removed from the car. (Although I accept that part of this comes down to finding your precise seating position) The 3.0 diesel engine is superb compared to any LR diesel I've driven. It's quick off the mark, has good pull for overtaking and is relatively quiet, very easy to live with, certainly not sluggish. (I'm sure chipping would make it very good indeed) . The 6 speed auto box is just like the one I have in the RRS, with the same steptronic mode etc.

On dual carriageways it's smooth as you would expect and on country roads I can't say it felt any better or any worse than the RRS. It drove very well.

Overall I would say it's a very nice machine, easy to live with, comparitively frugal (25mpg showing on my test drive) nice to look at (though it's no SC!)
and the model I drove sat on nice 20" alloys and was in Le Mans Blue. There really is no sense of feeling different from the pack though in one of these, in the RRS you ARE different, but people have no cause to stare at an X5. I would miss that. (Does that make me vain?)

Would I swap to one of these? Perhaps. Let's see what they'd offer me for mine first. If there's little money to be saved then it's not worth it, the whole point to the exercise is to see if I can cash in a lump sum afterall.

The salesman also said that the facelift version came out Jan 05.Not sure if this was a fib or not, people seem to be saying different things. L319 D4 HSE

RRUK, as I've said before we came down to a choice of 3:

RRSport
ML320CDi Sport
X5 3.0d Sport

X5 drove superbly and engine was refined and very quick. Really felt like an 'Estate car on stilts' and was the most car-like to drive.

However, this was not what we were looking for - We wanted a 4x4

RRSport was the one which delivered this.

Have to say also that driving through Europe as we are, and having driven past scores of New ML's and X5's, our Sport has turned heads EVERYWHERE we have gone - Especially with Stormers, side-steps etc,

Not true!

My neighbour has a facelifted X5 4.4i and she got it in 2004.
When I look on the internet, it says that it was introduced in October 2003.
