Over the past 12 months we have seen a huge increase in the number of New shape Range Rovers stolen through key cloning. The models effected are 2010-2014 with the proximity key and push button start. It first started with the BMWs. Thousands of BMWs were stolen across the UK. The thiefs then moved onto high end Fords and now the new model Range Rovers using the same key cloning technology. There are a number of ways these vehilce have been stolen. As you can see from the video below, the thief can now gain access to your car with out smashing a window. The Cars OBD port is then accessed and a specialist hand held key clonging device is plugged in. Within seconds a new key to your car is programmed. The thief then simply unlocks the car with the new key, starts the car and drives off. The problem is now seriously out of control. At the moment, gangs are operating mostly in and around London, Essex, Northampton and Birmigham with hundreds of Range Rovers being stolen each month.

Of course Tracker have no axe to grind here do they? No attempt to sell their system to owners, oh no. JLR has its own system in the InControl suite so Tracker are losing market share.

I'm not convinced that that would be any more secure than the cars own system when it comes down to it. A simple hidden switch for the fuel pump would probably be more effective, and a fraction of the cost. Besides which, are all these thefts before or after the LR software updates...? I think that these are befor the updates. To be fair since the campaign was rolled out I thought that it had gone quiet about folks concerns with regards to security?

May be if Land Rover took less profit from their products and reduced them to more affordable prices then the number of thefts would decrease................. After all nobody steals cheap products do they? In addition to what comes of standard and having had two attempts to remove previous Range Rovers form my drive I found Land Rover's latest addition to their anti theft armoury this morning to be their best one yet............... After 6weeks sat on the drive I got home to "warning low battery" this morning, pressed the starter and there was only a click................... Not enough juice in the battery to start it so off to collect my trusty 20 year old Defender to do the jump start duty............. It has sat in the cold shed since Nov 20th, hasn't turned a wheel and hasn't even been on a trickle charger................ Two cycles of the glow plug warm up and first full turn of the key it fired and ran smoothly and then progressed 1 mile up the road to my house to give a spark of life to the RRS2. So much for progress 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

That is the problem with having all these electronic gadgets. Things are still ticking away inside the new RRS that is draining the battery, whilst it is parked up. Not much to drain on an old trusty Defender. |
