Guys Please Help Me - Reliability Question

Hello guys ive seen the perfect one!!! RRS 2008 low miles and lovely condition etc. Drives beautifully.

I am so worried after the search function i used on here after typing in RELIABILITY.

Please tell me the 2.7tdv6 isnt a bad car. Come on 2.7td owners can you list me what youve had go wrong and how much to repair please. How long have you owned your RRS first gen?

I really have been my own self destruct reading all reliability threads. Im bloody putting myself off the car and i am annoyed as its perfect!!!

Please help me decide i need peoples experiences with first gen RRS to tell me good or bad stories - going to say yes or no tomorrow if i want the car.

I can afford to run this car i just need to know i wont be shelling out thousands and thousands every year and it has to be safe for my new born son/wife to be in during driving.

\help. \im so worried about making a mistake! Dont know whats up with me lol Im usually impulsive and would have bought it by now!

Thanks
Mike

sorry for sounding negative!

The car is 8 years old so there are no guarantees.

The condition and any service history can give you an indication of how well its been treated but that's no real indication of what's around the corner.

These cars can be expensive and usually are better for been regularly used but don't take the Forum as a cross section of reality.

Check that timing belt etc have been changed and the condition of suspension bushes. Might be a good idea to look at the tyre wear pattern anything other than even wear across the tread could mean miss-alignment.

If you can afford it take a punt, use it and the chances are it will be fine, but if you're just going to park it up most of the time expect electrical issues as the battery needs to be kept in tip-top condition

OK, here goes (since August 2013 at 75k to now at 138k):

EGRs blanked - minimal cost as 06MY
Silicone turbo hoses (preventitive) - around £80-90 for the set IIRC
    Autobox flush - £270
NSF driveshaft - £190ish - only true breakdown, and it was at the end of the road.
    Rear Prop - £254
    Battery - £76
    Alternator - circa £200

Now for the expensive bit:

Torque Converter - my fault though; I should have had a flush earlier
Turbo - I consider this unlucky; it was running (better than) fine and, apart from a slight rattle, there was no sign, so just as well it was found when it was!
Rear upper arms - wear and tear
F&R ARB bushes - wear and tear
Front to rear brake pipes - corrosion is quite common over time but not too expensive when replaced with copper
Second set of cam and fuel pump belts inc. oil and water pumps - belts done early, with oil pump as a preventitive measure.
Rear HVAC pipes - a very expensive couple of pipes; can be blanked off instead, but I didn't want to, so took the opportunity while the body was off
    Other bits and bobs

The above section was all done together and came to about £4.3k IIRC. A fortune was saved, however, by getting it all done in one big body-off job.

There have probably been other bits and bobs that I've forgotten, plus other modifications and purchases that may be a factor - e.g. Allisport intercooler - wasn't needed at the time, but for all I know it could have been later - the V8 brake upgrade replaced a seized slider pin. Diagnostic tools (Nancom and IID BT) have helped to identify issues (with the former also causing an issue...well I conject so).

Apart from the body-off job, and the box flush, everything has been DIY. Several services, various fluid changes, brake pads, discs and EPB shoes need adding to the list. Wink

The TC and turbo are quite a set back, but otherwise, I'm perfectly happy with the reliablity, albeit there's always something or other that needs doing and a wishlist of modifications. As said, a blown CV joint was the only breakdown. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Just wondering is it worth waiting and buying a newer one 12/13 reg? Do they suffer with the same issues ? Or did land rover correct them?

England 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Santorini Black

You know something, one of the worst money pits we ever owned was a 3 year old VW Golf 1.6Tdi with a 7 speed auto box.

It was my daughters car and came to us with 48k on the clock and a FSH. Within 2 weeks the EGR failed, and over a period of 18 months we ended up spending £2700 on the car.

Eventually we chopped it in and swapped it for another Golf 1.6Tdi with a 7 speed auto box. This car has been faultless for the last 3 years, even though I told her she was mad to go for the same make and model again.

What I am saying is that there is no way you can try to second guess if you are buying a good car or not. All you can do is carry out your own due diligence and check the car, service history and mot advisories and try to make an informed decision whether or not to buy.

If it is any consolation I woke up at 02:00 this morning in a cold sweat thinking that I have made a terrible mistake buying another new RRS2, that is due to be delivered in April. We all get pre car purchase nerves, you just have to do what you feel comfortable with. Any doubts about the Sport you are looking at, then simply walk away.

Have you banged the registration number into the YouGov MOT History site yet? If not do so as it will give you information on any advisories or fails the car has had during its lifetime.

Jim

The facelift models are generally a bit more reliable and come highly recommended. Whether or not you should wait depends on how long and if it's conveneint. If it wouldn't be long, then maybe, but don't waste your life away waiting for nothing when you could be enjoying a Mk1 version. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black

Had my 2007 2.7 since August 2015 has only needed a CV boot and front ARB bushes in that time, I have remapped and de egr through choice and had a gearbox flush as preventitive maintenance.

The key is finding a well cared for example with full service history, I know of someone who bought a 2007 and spent 2 k on it in the first 2 weeks, worth paying a little bit more for the right one Nanocom Evo

Had 2.7 for just over 2 years bought it with 98k on the clock full service history,
In the 2 years iv had it iv had No problems at all.
Iv had the normal things like brake pads changed oil service etc and Notting more,
Iv got a slight knocking sound now which is the lower arms been quoted been quoted £350 supply and fit which I think is cheap.
All in all my sport has been very reliable.
My advice to you would just buy it! Current 55 reg 2.7tdvs with Hst extras

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black

Try if you can and speak to the previous owner who if honest will be able to tell you it's full history and not just what is down on paper.
I am in the process of purchasing my first rrs which is a 2007 reg 08my tdv8 which is a one owner car with full dealer history and only 48k on the clock.
I managed to speak to the previous owner who is a retired gentleman and he 100% assures me that he hasn't had any problems with it whatsoever other than routine service work and replacing wear and tare items.
I too have reservations about big repair bills but if it's what you want and can afford to run it go for it.
We are only round this way once.

Phil.

Guys thanks for all your replies. I appreciate it I really do. It has made me feel really happy tbh that its not all doom n gloom.

Well today the garage put it for a fresh MOT and it failed on bushes so the garage have gone and ordered genuine land rover arms and bushes and fitting this afternoon price near £600 all in that they obviously take on the chin.

Thee garage have thouroifhky checked the car over and everything else is in good order .

So do you think sounds really good?? Think it's helped me settle some new car nerves

Like I said the car drove beautifully on the test drive very smooth and pulled well when I kept my foot down. I really really want this car so does my wife and I think we just want a bit of reassurance.

Like you guys say you only live once!

If I take the plunge tomorrow I'll make sure I maintain it to the best I can. It just had a service 700 miles ago.

Is there anything else I can do? Or just buy and enjoy it ? Wink
