Fuel Pump and filters - TDV8

Hi all,

Newbie here - straight in needing help - Sorry.

I have a problem with my RRS. It lost power and came to a stop the other day a few minutes after setting off. After RAC recovery home I am starting to try and diagnose the problem.

Currently the engine won't start. It tries to.. cranks over OK and fires, at first you think it is going to start but then after a few seconds of cranking the "bursts of hope" get fewer and it's clear it's not going to start. Re-cycle the ignition and the same thing happens. I wonder if the low pressure fuel pump / filter might not be working well.

Of course it might not be the fuel system - I have read horror stories about turbos and cam belts/chains but I ama born optimist!.

Can anyone offer any diagnosis tips for checking out the fuel delivery system? Is there a pipe in the engine bay I can pop off and see if I get good flow from the electric pump?

Also, I seem to have seen mention of a high pressure fuel pump drive belt that is problematical - but is that just on TDV6? How is the HPFP driven on a TDV8?

I have a workshop manual on the way but not arrived yet.

The HPFP is at the front of the TDV8, driven by a chain.

Check the fuel bleed screw for a good flow of diesel, and the HP fuel readings via diagnostics Thumbs Up

Thanks.

Found the HPFP. Just where you said it was.

I found the schrader valve and fluid flows out when pressed and the pump is running (ignition on). Just hunting about for a schrader valve removal tool so I can put a tube on it and drain some into a bottle to see if it clean.

There didn't seem to be any air there and bleeding a little on to a rag has not made a difference to the engine starting. Maybe not fuel after all.

Just a thought but if it was low fuel pressure wouldn't you get fault codes saying low rail fuel pressure ? Have you checked the oil level, oil in the air filter try removing the intake hoses and again check for oil. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

Thanks Camelrock - I appreciate the help

Yes, I removed both air pipes that run from the interccoler to inlet manifold (throtle body??). It all looked good to me - no wet oil on the inside of the pipes, a little smearing which is what I'd expect from a 110k miles. The air filter was all good too.

Oil level is at the lower end of the dipstick but definitely above minimum.

Now here I have to admit - it's actually my son's car (Sorry - I have an L322). He swears blind it has not been misfuelled and has even recounted his little fueling mantra to me (which is not actually much different from my own)

If it had been misfuelled surely I'd smell petrol from the filler cap or when I vent a bit through the schrader bleed valve?

I've ordered a schrader valve core remover so I can draw off a bit of fuel into a bottle to see what I can see.

Any more suggestions very welcome.

You can check the fuel flow by disconnected the quick release connector and check the flow. I would change the fuel filter as a matter of course 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

An update.

Drained all the fuel - which to be honest did not look too much like mixed. Refilled with 20l fresh diesel but still no start. It tries a bit, firing here and there but just does not catch.

I give up, I'll have to find an expert with better diagnostics.

Small update.

I had a local mechanic come and take a look. He read the codes and said there was a problem with one of the MAF sensors but that would not stop it from starting.

He poked about a bit and concluded there was not very much pressure in the high pressure fuel circuit. He tested this by slackening a nut from the manifold on the right hand bank and when cranked there was only a dribble of fuel coming out and he said there should be a positive squirt as it should be 100 bar or more.

Question. Would low pressure in the high pressure fuel line set a fault code?

Anyone know where a new (or recon) HPFP can be found?

What have your various 'experts' been using to read the fault codes? A generic tool will only detect generic fault codes and TBH this of only limited use on a sophisticated beast such as the RRS.

You need someone to use a fault code reader specific for the vehicle.

Yes. Low pressure should give you a fault code P008700 and there are other codes associated with other components of the fuel charging system.

Did you change the fuel filter as Camelrock suggested? Its an easy enough job. Just about possible in off-road height but better to raise up a bit with a jack.

Did you check Fuse 1E and Fuel pump relay (both in the engine compartment junction box).

These are the possible causes of non-start listed in the manual:
Engine cranks,
but does not
start:

Inertia fuel shutoff (IFS)
switch
Low/Contaminated fuel
Air leakage
Low-pressure fuel
system fault
Fuel pump module (lift
pump) fault
Blocked fuel filter
Fuel volume regulator
blocked/contaminated
Fuel pressure control
valve
blocked/contaminated
Fuel pump fault
Crankshaft position
(CKP) sensor

and the checks to make:
Check that the IFS switch has not tripped. (edit: Look under 'Fuel Cut-off' in the owner's handbook. Can be reset by turn key to position 0; wait one minute; turn to position II wait another 30 seconds; start engine.)
Check the fuel level and condition.
Draw off approximately 1 ltr (2.11 pints) of fuel and allow to stand for 1 minute.
Check to make sure there is no separation of the fuel indicating water or other
liquid in the fuel.
Check the intake air system for leaks.
Check the lift pump
operation, check the low-pressure fuel system for leaks/damage.
Check the fuel
filter, check for DTCs indicating a fuel volume or pressure control valve fault.
Check the fuel pump:
REFER to: Fuel Charging and Controls (303-04D Fuel Charging and Controls -
TDV8 3.6L Diesel, Diagnosis and Testing).
Check the CKP sensor circuits. Refer to the electrical guides.

Maybe some of the above will help find the problem?
