While driving over Xmas (HSE, Dec 2013, amazingly 38k trouble-free miles) a warning came up that the electronic oil level check was not working. Since then the warning has not returned BUT the oil level is showing at MAX – which I know is wrong because after its second service in October it was showing in the middle and no more oil has been added.

Does it read the same when checked both cold and hot (after turning off for 15 mins) |

^^^ This is important. The oil level can read higher than the past without adding more oil depending on how long the engine has been off for (and of course whether parked on a slope) when the readings were taken. When I got oil level and temperature sensor fault on my RRS1 it wasn't temporary and stayed there until fixed. Oil level couldn't be checked (showed as 'unavailable' in the conditions where it should have been available) during that time. If your sensors are faulty, replacing them may be quite an involved job because it is the same engine as my previous car and sensor could be equally inaccessible. I have few miles on my Sport, but am unable to check the oil level. Everytime I try,I get an "unavailable " message. I have never had the patience to sit there for ten minutes after I shut down, but get the same results when the engine is cold. Guess i had better check with my Dealer |

Hi, You don't have to wait 10 mins. To read the oil level. "Cold" do the following:- Pop the bonnet ( no need to actually open it) Switch on the power ( don't touch the brake pedal) Do the "oil level check" routine. When it comes up "unavailable", press "cruise resume" twice (I think) - on l494 you don't need to do this. The oil level should indicate but allow for the lack of expansion I.e. It will read slightly low. Finally - open & shut the bonnet. Can't say who told me about this - but you don't think LR Dealers wait 10 mins at every service do you? Scrumps.
