Rear Diff Requires Replacing

Just had the car back from its service and MOT and ive been told the rear diff has had its day.

Ive searched the forum, along with the Disco site and cant find any "How to" guides, or how big a job it is?

Can my local garage change the rear diff or do I need a specialist?

Advice appreciated. 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

Rear suspension and Huns have to come to bits, to remove the shafts and then get the diff out.

It's not a job for the faint hearted

So is this a job for a competent mechanic or a specialist?

How many many hours would you expect for this job. Just trying to establish a cost 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

A competent mechanic "should" be OK with it, but the EPB shoes and cables have to come off the hubs, rear upper arms come off the hubs, which may affect wheel alignment

Never had the displeasure of replacing one yet, but my own diff is howling away, and awaiting replacement when I have a day off. I will be setting aside a full day for it...

Had a reply from an Indy:

"Hi I have checked with my usual reconditioner they can only recon the customers own unit as there are several version of the diffs, the unit and fitting cost is approx, £840.00 inc oil and vat. This estimate is only possible if the unit is recondition able. We would need the vehicle for 4-5 days"

My worry here is the last part of "whether the unit is recoverable," as il bet that it won't be and this price will dramatically increase, and il have no other option but to pay the inflated price?

What are people's thoughts? I thought it was easy to get a direct replacement? 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

At that price I'd rather go the whole hog and buy a new unit.

There is a small company, Iawa4x4, who have done recons of front diffs for members on here. Might be worth asking them for a price as the front was £4-500inc from memory.

Just tried them, no luck!

Turns out the banging that I have (other post) is the rear diff slipping. So it's completely Censored now, so no chance of reconditioning mine!

Can anyone suggest places to get hold of a unit? I've had a really good search online but the numbers are well Over the £1.2k mark 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)
