You need to attempt to charge the battery with a proper charger, to see if the battery is faulty first

What voltages are you getting (alternator and battery)? Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

You can only check the alternator output once it runs on its own. Checking the output whilst the casualty vehicle has jump leads attached from a donor vehicle will give you a false reading as it is receiving input from the donor vehicle alternator. The first thing to do is put the battery on a slow trickle charge off the vehicle for 24 hours, then refit and check charge rate. If you are getting a decent output from the alternator, and I always work on seeing at least 13.5v, then you are looking at a new battery. |

Not really, no, as the alternators are still having to power the vehicles. You need a proper charger. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

You make a good point really! When I say "proper charger" what I really mean is "charger".

Yes don't leave the donor vehicle connected with both vehicles running as it won't be a good outcome for either vehicle. As said, take it off the vehicle and charge it properly on a trickle for 24hours. You can't really move forward until you have done this. Unless of course you just bite the bullet and buy a new battery; which I suspect you may have to do anyway. |

i jump started and left the engine running for a couple of hours... it starts now without any jump start now, but still scared to take it for a spin incase it just stops on me while driving, as it did once last week.

I have a CTEK MXS 5.0 charger and they are a top bit of kit, if you have tow bar electrics you can buy a plug in adapter from Disco 3.

If you were driving and it died, then that points to a faulty alternator. The battery is only there as a means to start the vehicle. Once it has started then the alternator runs all electrics as well as putting a charge back in the battery for your next start-up. If the alternator isn't grafting, the battery power will be used until such a point where it goes flat and you grind to a halt. If you can start it now, then get a test meter and put it on the '20v' range and with the vehicle running put the leads from the meter onto the pos and neg terminals on the battery. You should see at least 13.5 volts. Any less and the alternator isn't really up to scratch. If your battery is quite old now, this may have damaged and it may not hold a charge anymore, but don't buy a new battery without checking Alt output first as you will eventually just grind to a halt again if the Alt is goosed. Good luck |
