United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Santorini Black
Standard stereo

After 2 weeks in my new car, (WOW what an improvement over the 10MY) my only disappointment is the stereo, or lack of!

I cant put up with this in a £70k+ car so have no option but to take it to a local car audio guy and get it enhanced. My question is, the standard streo lists 8 speakers, i count far more in the door cards so is each car built the same but speakers left out? It has a distinct lack of bass, do i even have a sub? If not where is it located in the ungraded set up? I want to avoid cuting holes in door cards etc..

Anybody else upgraded after market? 16MY RRS, Fuji, Dynamic with AB kit, stealth pack - LOVE IT!

Speaker grilles are present on all the cars. Only difference is the 1700W system which gets extras.

The thing that I found most troubling on the standard one was the lack of central speaker.

The issue you'll probably have is that I doubt the required wiring is present.

Yes Forest, LR has reduce the output/quality of the stanard audio for 2016MY, not only is it very basic but the price of the car was not reduced to reflect it. The output is also dropped from the base 380 system that you and I have in our 2015MY cars to 180W, IIRC the number of speakers has also fallen. The "basic" model that we have is now the upgrade to model! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Cheers Tim for that. I did have a land rover my 15.5 hse dynamic as a loan car and that appeared to sound better than mine. That must be the next up then.

So yes I would be slightly cheesed off if they reduced the power and removed some of those speakers from previous MY.

I have the HSE Dynamic MY16 and the build spec from Topix states mine is the basic system at 400w, don't know how many speakers as I have not bothered looking. System is OK but lacks base as someone else has stated, I had the 850w Meridian system in an Evoque and it was a total waste of money - thats the audio system and the Evoque!

Bottom line is I bought the RRS because I enjoy driving, I can listen to music at home. For me a better sound track would have been a V8 but my pension won't reach that far.

Well I was listening to Florence + The Machine in mine today (I have the Meridian Signature system) and she sounded pretty darned good. I think the central speaker is key in anchoring the stereo image and the sub-woofer both to provide the deep bass and offload the other drivers from having to provide it. Mark

Artful Dodger, how did you get on? Did you answer your questions and take further action with upgrading?
I ask because I am thinking of doing the same thing for the same reasons ...

Australia 2013 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Fuji White

My first RRS2 had the standard system which I was very underwhelmed with so I took the car for a quote for an upgrade from a car audio specialist.

After looking over the car the guy confirmed that a number of the speaker grills (mainly door and rear from memory) were in fact empty - so it would seem the same interior door cards etc. are used (bit cheeky really).

As I understand it the base unit of the Meridian system is under the passenger seat, don't think there is one for the standard.

I was advised that they could not retrofit the bass system under the seat nor connect it with the head unit (it would need a volume control mounted beneath the dash) and it would need to be in the boot, but could replace speakers in the doors etc.

Not wanting a box in the boot for the bass nor a non-standard dial on the dash I was put off and didn't proceed...

Would be interested what is recommended for your bass placement.

Current car has the middle/Meridian system which is pretty nice (although a Bose system in a past Porsche Cayenne S I had was superior). MY15.5 Fuji White, SDV8 HSE Dyn Stealth Pack

Thanks, ExPat, that's very useful info. I would probably feel the same about boxes and dials, so we'll see if I get any different advice ... I guess it's always worth upgrading speakers, but the lack of a sub is a key issue ...
Anybody else?

I would think you could put some very meaty 2-way or 3-way speakers into the larger door speaker spots, thus giving a good degree of bass, albeit possibly not to the extend of the sub.

That being said there are slimline bass units available - maybe that chap just was't comfortable enough to take out the passenger seat...

Good luck! MY15.5 Fuji White, SDV8 HSE Dyn Stealth Pack

Has anyone managed to fit an aftermarket sub to the rrs ? The one we have is the base system that lacks any form of bass.

I have the L494 HSE Dynamic (end 2013) without the meridian upgrade. Got an active subwoofer which has a built in amp fitted about a year ago. Unit is on the footwell of the centre rear seat covered by carpet and no messy wires except for a gain controller under the front seat. Bass is much improved but a bit boomy. Also replaced tweeters near the door mirrors with superior morel ones and treble is also much better. Cost about £450.
Have been looking at options to improve further. This means a proper subwoofer and speakers but key issue is the weak amp in the original head unit. This means you need a new amp in the boot plus subwoofer enclosure built into the boot wall. I have seen it done on some cars and looks neat and not that obtrusive. Problem is the price as you need new amp, subwoofer, enclosure and wiring.

Hi. I specced the meridian 825W system on my MY16.5 HSE Dynsmic delivered just a few weeks ago. It's my first Range Rover Sport. I am slightly underwhelmed by the sound quality compared to my previous BMW.
How can I be sure if the system is actually installed if speaker covers are std?. Is it the fact that meridian/Dolby/dots options appear in the settings menu? Any easy way to confirm?
Thanks in advance.
