Is there anywhere a comparison between the new and the old one on winter tires?

Scotland 2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 SE Santorini Black

It's funny you had that experience in 2010 MW, I got mine in that year, and 2010 was the worst snowfall on record, but I found mine really surefooted on an emergency dash up to Glasgow one night. The M8 was full of abandoned cars and trucks, but in grass/gravel/snow setting mine performed perfectly on the cr4p standard Contis! Admittedly I was the only car on the road, and wasn't having to brake or go down any steep hills. At the time I was amazed at the ability of the RRS to not spin up any wheels, so much so, the next day I was burying the throttle into the carpet on that setting to see what happened (in a deserted car park) and the engine didn't seem to do anything the drivetrain didn't want to do. I can see that on a flat open space they are fine, might have been different if I was attempting an emergency stop on a hill.
Cheers

The problem as I see it is NOT getting going and staying going, it's overcoming the momentum of 3 tonnes of steel, glass and plastic when trying to stop and no amount of clever electonics or winter tyres is going to help then (I speak from experience of hitting ice in my 1st RRS).
Winter 2009/2010 I drove from Southampton to Stirling in GGS mode for most of the way and the car was on 20" M&S tyres (depsite having a set of proper Ice and Sn oq tyres in my garage at home Embarassed Embarassed ) I got as far as Gretna and the police were checking every car trying to get further north for tyres and ablity. 99% of Land Rover and Jeep products were flagged through, very few BMW X's were allowed onto the road. I was followed by a Ford Focus shod with winter tyres and when I pulled into Stirling Services after a somewhat unpleasant drive in driving snow and snow on the M74 up to 10" deep I was somewhat surprised to find the Focus pulling into the services behind me! The driver hadn't just followed me along the M74 he had actually followed me all the way from Winchester as he figured that if I got got through he was going to have a good go at it! He then went on to tell me that he was actually on his way further north to Inverness............ and he made it too!

All modern Land Rover products are great in snow on standard tyres and better on Winter Tyres and better still on Ice and Snow tyres. My 1996 Defender though on it's MTR's is lethal, yes it will keep going and going but it is not as reassuring to drive as my RRS's have ever been. I see no reason why RRS2 cannot be great on snow, especially if you have the Dynamic versions with Auto Terrain Response which if left in Auto should select the right program for the conditions and utilise the lcentre and rear eDiffs to keep you going but be under no illusions neither will stop as easily as a Fiesta or a Subaru once that brown trousers inducing slide has started.......
The biggest problem with RRS when driving in driving snow is that the headlights very very quickly get caked with compacted snow so you have to stop frequently to clear your headlight lenses, even the heated front screen struggled to stop the build up of snow on the screen and in freezing conditions the wiper rubbers get cold and hard and can scratch your windscreen! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Italy 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Bonatti Grey

Thank you all, so i am asking my self what are the mechanical differencies betwween the RRS l320 and the New one?

what kind of differential they has? what are the differencies of the 2 Terrain Response package?

In many comparatives between BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne etcc.. they say that the off road and the snow performance of the Land Rover is much better cause the Terain Response, i would like to undersatnd how does it works the system in RR and how it works the system in the other car. +
Does a RRS has a Torsen diff? i see that it has 2 diff since on the scrren i can select to lock one or 2 diff or both depending of the program i select.
I understood that there are different settings for the Terrain repsonse but in general i choose the programs, is there any other way to customize it?
Thanks

The locking dif icons are on the screen but it doesn't mean you have a locking rear dif fitted, optional extra !! Except on HST's and G4 cars. The only way to check is to go under the car or find abit of mud and go play see if the icons show the digs locking. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

The locking diffs are standard on RRS2 Dynamics, and they work really well in mud, wet grass and other slippery conditions even with 22" wheels shod with road tyres (I think they have to work a bit harder then but they do their stuff). 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

On a LRE day I seem to recall if you have 4x4 screen on and touch symbol on it for diff it locks if you have it but I may be mistaken Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I have just been out to my RRS2 and touching the diff icons on the screen does nothing (the car may have to be moving though and I was stopped on my drive). When I have been off road with it both the diffs have operated totally automatically (they are called e-diffs!) and they progressively lock from 0 to 33% to 66% to fully locked and both do this. I've checked in my owners manual and there is no mention at all of the e-diff. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Sorry I was talking about RRS1 but I may be getting confused Embarassed

On DS I have rear diff lock symbol on 4x4 screen and it appears to lock automatically when it detects action required as percentage increases Cool Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

RRS1 diffs are automatic too.

On the DS, it runs as basically a FWD car to save fuel, I think, and just brings the rear in to play when required. There's a clever pair of multi-clutches on the rear axle that control wheel / drive. The whole rear drive line is disconnected when cruising too. So it's a 2WD Land Rover. Whatever next!? Whistle

In which case you have the good old Haldex system as used by FL2 to good effect. I think it's still FWD once up to speed though.

The reality with all of these systems is that they are more than capable for 95%+ of buyers. Most people will just want some extra grip on the occasional wet grass/muddy car park/bit of snow and they will be OK with the old FL2's set up. A decent set of tyres would be a useful investment too, of course. Sadly, I think too many people driving LR's products are up to their eyes in "keeping up appearances" debt so they scrimp on the tyres.

DS with decent rubber would likely be able to follow RRS/D4 further than the owner's bravery would allow them to try. Which is actually a good thing when you think about it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
