To cut a long story, I was first on the scene of a very nasty car accident last night. Not being involved in the crash, I put one injured girl in my passenger seat and after 2 hours of attention by the firemen and paramedics, I was shown a print out of an RRS with no roof, showing cutting points for the jaws...they warned me that they may have to take my roof off to get the injured girl back out of my car. The lesson to this is always put the interests of the injured party first, but if its not raining and safe to do so, place them out of harms way on a verge/in a field so the paramedics can lay them flat & keep them still. If my car hadn't been a large 4x4 the roof would certainly have come off. Can't praise the Essex/Suffolk fire crews and paramedics highly enough.

How would that help them get a passenger out of your car? Not like she has to squeeze out a small door opening...

That's correct Ady. My thread is not exactly RRS related but having seen accidents close up a couple of times now, its a quick reminder that these things happen so fast

I'm sure papers had story recently where good samaritan did same thing and they cut roof off but insurance refused to pay as it wasn't accident damage

Even if you don't have a 1st Aid Kit in your car a vacuum packed "space blanket" is a worthwhile thing to have handy if there are "walking wounded" after an accident like this. Wrap the shocked/ injured in it and make them sit down in a safe place until help arrives. Something like the picture above happened earlier this year only it was a nearly New FFRR. Low speed bump but pas said hi sneak hurt so off with the roof. He walked out the hospital a couple of hours later with a stiff neck. The killer was it was a lone car !!! 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

I was one of the first on scene at a crash the other week, I've got a small med kit and a couple of blankets so stopped to see if I was any use. Fortunately one of the blokes already there was a medic driving home, which was a big relief as my first aid skills are rusty (and he had tonnes of kit in his car)

The only things needed from me were my blankets to keep casualties warm and a knife to cut the seatbelts if I had one (I didn't have a knife)

I never got my blankets back and had to buy more, but I also put a penknife and a fire extinguisher in the boot when I got home as the thought of a car catching alight with a trapped person inside isn't pleasant.

Not even sure if it's a realistic scenario (trapped by seatbelt rather than buckled metal etc) and you don't want to move a casualty, but a burning car makes the decision for you.
