United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Santorini Black
Self scratching piano black internal finisher trim

A mystery. I have heard the info that the latest internal fitment piano black wood finisher is mega easy to scratch, so we have treated ours with kid gloves.. not put anything near it, zilch. However now the car is at 750 miles old, on the centre consul suddenly two 1 cm scrtachs have appeared.. Well Censored me I thought.. it must be self scratching, now thats an unusual LR feature. Of course I am not happy at all about this, as the finisher is completely non practical, but has anyone managed to polish the scratchs out? or does it just make it worse?. I would imagine the polish would have to be mega fine and the cloth application totally clean, i.e new.. as it appears the issue is in the mega soft clear coat over the trim that is scratching.. Interestingly on a past Disco 4 we had the same black finisher and it did not scratch... so I am asuming either the clear coat on the trim takes months/years to harden, or its a different clear coat being used which is pants..

Happened on my 15MY L405 within a couple of weeks of delivery. Absolutely cannot be avoided it appears to scratch if it even thinks about a bit of dust! My L322 version did not scratch so easily though.

To be fair to LR, this does seem to be quite a common theme with this finish. Other manufacturers with the finish I've owned in the past also struggle (particularly BMW in which it was a nightmare).

The only exception I've had is Bentley but the attention to detail on their veneers is very different to LR piano black which, to me, dare I say it, feels like black high gloss plastic!

It depends on the depth of the scratches, if they are pretty light you could try using auto finesse tripple. see pictures of the difference it made when used on the notoriously soft piano black exterior trims of my sport. I see no reason you could not use it on the interior but I would mask off carefully first.

a coat of Auto Finesse "tough coat" over the top will help protect it a bit.

i had the piano black in the evoque and although it looked great at first I lived in constant fear of scratching it. Hence no black in the sport.

Interesting ref the auto finesse tripple on the exterior plastics. Mine came new from the dealer with micro swirl marks after a paint treatment was applied to the vehicle by them! or the RRS exterior plastics are also self scratching, so I may try this to see if it can put right the issue.
The internal piano black scratchs are quite light, but the worry is this is all happening at 750 miles, not 75,000 miles. As I have said previously IMHO some of the LR plastics/material choices are not fit for purpose for a vehicle of this cost and surposed quality. I am seriously questioning the quality of the RRS2 now. D4 2012 Santorini Black gone

Have a guess from the photos below when the scratches most likely appear:

No. Far too abrasive.
