in the terminals when you load a lorry unless it is company specific(esso, say)there are no additives ,when coryton was open,it depended on what loading numbers you input, then the additives where injected as you loaded,ifI remember correctly ,the anti -freeze in diesel is already in it now till bout march ,I think.also most of the supermarkets pull out of the same places but without the additive so the derv is the same as anyone else,s,from that terminal

Pretty much any old diesel is fine. I don't believe in the rip-off stuff. High octane petrol is just that, but diesel has naff all of an octane rating in any form. You could consider adding two-stroke oil though (lots of info on Disco3 and Freel2 Wink ).

Others may disagree, but I also say that sticking to "premium brands" (i.e. BP, Shell etc.) is also tosh - it's all bought wholesale from the same places and it all has to meet the required standards...

Thumbs Up

No, don't put two-stroke oil in it. There is absolutely no scientific evidence that it does any good whatsoever. There is no info about using two stroke oil other than people saying "I use it". The whole idea started in a forum a few years ago and the person who started it refused to provide any evidence. There is evidence out there showing that it does no good. And yet people still do it. Bizarre.

As for diesel - the manufacturers add different additive packs. Shell's V-Power diesel, for example, is a blend of normal diesel and synthetic diesel (gas to liquid). I certainly find my TDV8 runs without any smoking when the taps are fully opened. That's using only decent brand diesel. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Synthetic diesel, that's something I haven't heard mentioned before.... That sounds good to me, what are the benefits of synthetic diesel?

What other diesels are there from which garages?

Shell = standard and V power
Sainsbury's = Standard and City
Morrisons = just standard
BP = standard and ultimate (I think)
Esso =
Texaco =
Asda =
Tesco =

Anyone know and what makes them better?! I want to know which is better almost maybe a list of best to worst?! Perhaps get a full list and reasons / evidence and make it a sticky? Am I hoping for too much?! Laughing

My personal experience, bought a petrol with engine management light on dash and was told by Mike (disco_mikey) to put some posh expensive petrol in the tank a few times, result - perfect, worked a treat.

moral of the story posh fuel is better in one way or another.

There's no scientific "evidence", but there is experience, including that of my own. If you mean this as the evidance against it - http://www.fuelexpert.co.za/2-stroke-oil-i...-study.php - then I consider a test using only one single engine design to be far from conclusive. It's very hard to get unbiased and reliable evidence these days, so I choose to go on my experience and gut instinct. I've experienced fair benefits of running 2SO, and I have not seen any evidence of increased injector fouling on my vehicle. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Wilson, did you fret so much about the petrol you put into your previous cars? I doubt it, you just went to a forecourt and put some into the tank, paid for it and drove off. If you felt the car wasn't performing too well you just said to yourself that you must remember not to use that forecourt agian................... Basically Diesel is just the same, except when you spill it on your hands or shoes the stench lingers for ages. ALL petrol and diesel sold in the UK has to conform to British Standard and EU minimum standards, anything the oil majors add to it is a bonus and they might even charge more for it. Best thing is to brim your tank with the diesel from your local forecourt 2 or 3 times and run it to minimum tank and refill and see how the car runs, then try another brand or higher cetane rated diesel. I think whichever fuel you use is possibly a personal thing, I use Sainsbury's Diesel in both my cars only because that is convenient for me and the cheapest available locally, both cars run as expected on it. If I am away from home and have to refuel then I fill the car with whatever is avilable where I am and in niether my current RRS nor my Defender have I noticed any difference in performance or MPG. One thing though, personnally I have tried the "Super/V" formula diesels and don't find that they have any effect whatsoever on anything except that they lighten my bank account more rapidly..................
One thing that you find from now until March/April is that all diesel formuations will change and anti-waxing additives are added at no additional cost to you. This is because in cold weather diesel becomes quite viscous and forms a waxy texture that modern high pressure diesel injection systems cannot cope with, also you might get a warning on the dash that the water trap is full, this is rare these days but yes, there can be a percentage of water in diesel and it can damage your engine. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Hi Tim, some of my previous cars I have put particular petrol in, the tuned TT I had I would only put Shell Vpower or Momentum, other performance but not tuned more than factory I would only run on Super or more. and of course I have had standard bangers which I haven't cared what goes in them as long as they run!

I've never really bothered using brand over supermarket before though.

Australia 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Bonatti Grey

Hi, from down under.
All interesting reading .As a matter of interest down under there appears to be two types of diesel being 'Marketed".
Normal and 'Special premium or what each one wants to call it.' They are the ones that are more expensive and its justified by 'Clean burning ,better economy etc etc' but it seems that its just the normal stuff with a couple of extra additives- they say. Rolling Eyes
We have a compilcated senario where the biggest Supermaket chain (Coles)runs 90% of the Shell outlets and Woolworths run about 50% of the Caltex (Texico) outlets. Both sell the two types of diesel to compete with the Cheaper Independents who only sell normal diesel.
We have run this in our fleet for over 10yrs without any problems. I think the more expensive version is there to rip people off who drive Range Rovers. Rolling with laughter

I think you're right Cracka! Laughing

Well I want to know which diesel has what additives etc to justify the higher price, I won't go out of my way for a particular fuel, but given the choice nearby I'll go with the better fuel

All the evidence, tests, spectrometer tests etc. seem to suggest there is no difference between supermarket fuel and branded fuel. The only time I have ever noticed a difference or had any problems it was with branded fuel.

I can only speak for myself after having done numerous 1000 mile tests, I get more mpg, less smoke and a smother running engine on Shell and Bp standard diesel, however the sport runs like a bag of spanners on Asda fuel.
I do put Shell max diesel in every now and again and the pick up time is quicker, but smokes a bit more.
I wouldnt object to putting supermarket fuel in if I had too, Sainsburys seems ok, but I would never use Asda again. 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

It's interesting that last winter I was working in a different location to normal, many a for a spell used Asda diesel, as the most convenient, twice over the winter the "water in diesel" message appeared on what was then a FFRR, never had any problem with any other brand supermarket, or premium, and it generally gets a mix depending on where I am at the time, given a choice, I'd do though actively avoid Asda now,Mobutu not other supermarkets. It could just as easily have been a site specific issue.
