It's very difficult for any of us to say you won't get any trouble, but very many of us do go day after day (week after week) without any issues. I don't really spend much time working on the car at all - and when I do it's as good as always before any breakdown has occured.

Only once has my D3 truly "broken down", and that was just a CV joint (even then, there actually was a warning of this that I'd picked up on and was waiting to develop to allow diagnosis). By chance, it happened right at the end of our road, so it was limped back, I fitted a new driveshaft the next day, and good as new.

On the other hand, I have recently spent >£4k on a torque converter (wouldn't have been needed had the box been flushed sooner), turbo and lots of other stuff - but most of it was preventitive maintainence that I was able to get sorted while the body was off.

The only way you would get a one that causes trouble every day is if you don't get things sorted when they crop up.  Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I guess we can only pass on our own experiences. I've also had a few BMW's and am a big fan. I like the way they are designed. But I've spent a similar amount of money on them too. I had an M3 a few years back, and though it was an excellent driving car, it did need money spending on it, to keep it working properly.

To some extent all big 4X4's cost more to maintain, as all the usual things have a hard life keeping a 2+ tonne vehicle going. A colleague of mine has an X5, and he spent quite a bit on it replacing suspension bushes, control arms etc, then all the brakes discs and pads needed replacing. In between all that, he was having to throw tyres at it ! It's not the cars fault as such.

I'm going through the same thing with my Sport. I looked at quite a few, and only bought one that someone had maintained properly, but as it's now done 96K, I'm starting to replace bit of suspension as they wear.

As for the general reliability, I think that there are issues, but you can dodge some of them. TDV8's seem to have some (very expensive issues), and the later 2.7 V6's (2007 onward) can have problems with the timing case cover.

Other than that, a lot of problems can be fixed if you spend time understanding the car. For me that's easy, as I'm a professional engineer, so it's a bit of a hobby. Which brings me back to my point about the huge enthusiast network for LR products. Don't underestimate how much info is available, and how many knowledgeable garages there are locally to you. And as everyone says, it really does drive soo much better than the X5 (unless you're into the classic M Sport teeth jarring ride).

BMWs have Haldex couplers only in the Mini cars. The X-Drive uses a centre diff with an electronically regulated lock.

Well guys iv decided against buying a RRS as for the budget i want to spend they are just to unreliable and have to many issues.

Maybe ill look into them again in a few years when the newer tdv6 3.0 is in my budget but for now the hunt is on for a bmw x5 3.0d or maybe even a porsche cayenne 3.6 v6

iv been on the bmw forums and they dont seem to have as many serious issues and iv had bmw for the last 10 years so know them quite well and have a brilliant bmw specialist that i use.
