So it is better than the BMW system?

Never said the BMW system is better - I said they pioneered the concept way back in 2011. The RR system is better in that it shows a full birds eye view which includes the front but the BMW system offers views to both sides and rear using just the cameras under the wing mirrors.

As this is a RR forum I shout YES THE RR SYSTEM IS BETTER!! Bow down

Bezzita, I would think not, LR doesn't like to make any technology roll back to older cars.

IIRC Nissans have had plan view as an option since about 2006 so BMW was only copying Nissan technology................ 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

What I meant was to older L494 model.

Mine is MY15.5 and I just missed this by 6 months. The only reason I didn't optioned up the surround camera because it was tacky IMO.

I think the Screen/Infotainment system is using the same parts, if we can get the right parts and/or module for this surround camera , may be it matters of updating the OS/firmware of the infotainment system?!?!? I could be wrong.

Bezzita never say never...I guess it could be done but would cost a huge amount of money making it pretty much worthwhile. If your car is so new why not order a new one and make the change to the new car - I reckon the changeover cost would be less than what you would pay for a retrofit!

My last car had one of the very first InControl systems, one month after delivery LR upgraded the system to include Apps but older cars(including mine) could not have their software updated to run the new system, it was different to the current InControl Apps system as it didn't need a SIM for the car, it used your smartphone for connectivity. I'm sure that a lot of these things are software upgrades and don't require any hardware alterations unless the plan view requires a higher definbition screen and more powerful chip to run it. If you don't have the Surround Cam system then I suspect it will be hugely expensive to retrofit it as you also get other systems like trailer assist with it. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

The bird's eye view on the latest system uses a single front-facing camera, so couldn't be retrofitted to the older two camera system.

It's a bit of a gimmic IMHO anyway as the view is not bird's eye and is easily distorted by objects above the ground (eg. The ones you are going to hit).

ETA: A system could be made to work much better by using a combination of two cameras each side: With two cameras giving a view at two angles it is possible to generate a 3D view/map. The traffic sign recognition camera and the front surround camera could cover the front, the existing reverse camera and one where the old one was at the top of the spoiler would cover the rear. Where to put the extra camera on each side at the top is the only design issue.
