Start your own website...

Hello, has anyone got any experience with starting their own website?

Thereīs a lot to look into: which domain, where to register, choosing a host, using a website-builder...
Does anyone have any tips/inside information?

I am a noobie... Big Cry I've got a Range Rover and a little Mercedes. I normally drive my Range Rover because I feel like a monster in it. Nobody messes with me.

Scotland 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Buckingham Blue

Hi, ive just started a new website with Godaddy.com, very easy to use, lots of help and various prices for whatever you might need. I had another website years ago through someone else and it was really hard to try and build or adjust it, but this time its really hassle free Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 Supercharged Buckingham blue

GoDaddy are OK for the domain name, I wouldn't host with them.

For hosting, I use Vidahost. Tried loads of others and I like them up to now the best.

I can point you to a couple of very good, not terribly expensive, UK techs if you want? Get a 2005-2009 RRS (FAH500210) sat nav/dash mat here - the one that wasn't there when you bought the car.

I design and build websites for three charities mainly Gurkha Regiments. All done for free.

Taught myself using Serif Webplus which I rate highly with lots of online help and helpful forum. Hosting by LCN who. Are the brilliant with excellent technical suprt.

Some of my websites :

Go for Serif Webplus or. Wordpress. LCN give Serif away for free if you host with them.

i'd agreed there! dodaddy is a very slow host, and even their domain forwarding service fails regularly. buy your domain from them if you can get a good deal, but have your website hosted elsewhere. My cousin and sister both use one.com and they're very happy with them. Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.
DONE: Meduza front bumper, AB rear bumper, AB tailpipes, calipers repainted, rear upper tailgate upgrade, side steps, AB front grille, AB side vents, rear LED lights, clear side repeaters, integrated daytime running lights, LED headlights.
TO DO: color code sills and pillars.

Thanks everyone for commenting on this thread, Iīm back! Well, it took me some time to get other things sorted, get into the web stuff and then get back here Very Happy But now I did!

Still havenīt set anything up permanently, but Vidahost seems decent and I checked out GoDaddy Domains. Seems like a cheap thing, but isnīt it cheaper to combine hosting and domain registration? Get it with one and the same company?

I found a deal with 1&1 where the unlimited hosting package gets you 1 free domain as well? Seems reasonable. I've got a Range Rover and a little Mercedes. I normally drive my Range Rover because I feel like a monster in it. Nobody messes with me.

This fairly recent thread may be of use: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic134220.html Thumbs Up

From what I've read, I wouldn't touch 1&1 with a barge pole... Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Hi - on recommendation of my web design chap I use Hostpapa - they'll also host emails etc

I'm a bit IT ignorant but they're certainly not expensive and so far no probs or issues at all.

Don't use 1&1... almost _anywhere_ will be better for you! I had such grief getting one of my domains released from there to transfer to a new registrar.. my next step was sadly going to be down the legal path. Luckily, I managed to get things moved eventually, but never again!

Getting domains and hosting at the same place isn't really going to impact price (and a *.uk domain is ~Ģ7 for 2 years). Personally, all of my *.uk domains are registered at 123-reg, my .net, .com, .org, .me domains are registered at DomainSite (now rebranded as name.com) and my .io domains with namecheap.. just worked out the best prices for the domains this way. If you only have one or two domains, it probably won't make too much difference in price (a quid here or there or so).

I have a server rented from Heart Internet, they also do hosting, not had a problem with them over the past few years of using their service, or 123-reg might be another option (have had clients in the past that have used them).

For a "site builder" I'd probably go with something like Wordpress personally.. easy enough to install, use and modify if you wish with an abundance of resources on the net for it.

Cheers..

Ian
