The RRS I've just bought (from a friend who did pre-warn me there might be a problem) has this oil in the servo failure problem that was subject to a recall some years ago. The car had the recall done in 2009 according to the Stealer and it is going in this afternoon to have it checked out to make certain it is the same symptom

Where do I stand if this is the same problem as the recall was meant to rectify. I wouldn't expect it to happen again if the job had been done right first time round. Do I press for it to be done again?

Oil in the Servo. £1000 + VAT to fix it. Gutted. Emailed LR to see if they will foot some of the cost. Not holding out much hope as it's been six years since the recall was done

Isn't a used servo a better option? Get a 2005-2009 RRS (FAH500210) sat nav/dash mat here - the one that wasn't there when you bought the car.

I had the same issue last year, even though I took my car in for the recall in 2009.
Indie I took it to said the valve the main dealer fitted to the pipe from the servo was fitted the wrong way round. He also mentioned when they go in for the recall the damage may have already been done, but the technicians were only fitting the modified valve / pipe and didn't really check for oil that was already in the servo.
He replaced the servo with a new original part, cost around £65. There's one on EBay for sale now.

Hats off JLR and Grange (formerly T H White) near Swindon.

After a diagnostic they found oil in the servo and vacuum pipes so replaced the lot. The RRS came back yesterday with:

new vacuum hose
new vacuum pump
new brake booster (servo)

Ive just noticed this on mine over the last few days.

I had also noticed the 'running water' sound mentioned in another recent thread.

A bit worrying as we are off on a long journey shortly.

I am waiting for a call back from the local LR dealers to see if its been done on mine already.

update:

The dealers called back to say that the PO17 recall had been done on mine in November 2011.

I have it booked in tomorrow with the local indie who is going to check if its the same symptoms. I will then know if I have an argument on my hands with LR to get it fixed a second time.

The car is in the Dealers at the moment and they have just called back to say there is oil in the booster and master cylinder etc. (which I had verified by an indie the other day)

I explained to him that I am sure this is a recurrence of the PO17 recall and he is now checking it with the technician.

Does anyone know if there is any other way that oil could get into the booster and master cylinder other than the fault under the PO17 recall?

It would be good to know so that I am well prepared for the discussion with LR to pay for it.

Like Bodsy said - the only way oil can get to the servo is through the vacuum pump and up the vacuum tube into the Servo.

LR didn't quibble about the issue with me. The dealer tested the servo and found it had reduced functionality (faulty) due to oil being present. As mentioned LR now recommend the whole vacuum pump is replaced (which is £575 alone) together with the pipe and Servo so well worth pursuing it

The dealers have now agreed that it is the PO17 issue and are speaking to LR to get it sorted. They were happy to charge me for the work before I pushed the issue with them.

Final update - I now have the car back with all new parts courtesy of LR.
