Trying to find the cable (went RScomponents and they didn't have it. What I need is a 18 way 1mm pitch cable.

Anyways, I did buy PCB lacquer. Will that be sufficient to insulate it?

However the longest I could source was about 450 mm which I don't think will be enough to reach the upper glove box...

Never heard of PCB lacquer, so not sure if this is going to be sufficient. I was thinking of wrapping thew PCB in a static bag which you get when you buy electrical components and then wrap this in bubble wrap to protect against knocks.

No worries glad to have been of some help.

I've still got a long way to go on mine between work, wife and 16 month old daughter I'm not getting much time to mess around with the Sport.

I got your PM also, will send you the backgrounds now and the PowerPoint etc this evening when I'm home.

Also. When you put your HU in did you cut the two black tabs that slot into to the chassis?

I've put it in but its protruding too far out esp with the dial buttons. I've removed the covers but the metal dial is still pushing to far out.

Not sure what to do other than cut the black tabs.

Also where did you get the icons from. Would want to add some extras 😃

I thought the black tabs where on the lower portion of the HU which you removed? Basically, the CD changer portion...?

If so there shouldn't be a problem?

The majority of the icons are from Audi's own system. Basically copied them. The new ones, like USB 1, or TuneIn radio are made from scratch using a simple box created in PowerPoint and them finding the correct logo on the internet.

It's a simple process but very boring as it's repetitive and you have to find the right images on the net...

I thought I could put the new facia in there whilst raising the head unit (can't show it in a pic) so that the head unit would be position about 30 degrees. It would have fit if it weren't for the dials.

Anyway,

decided it can go on top!

I used a slider volume control which you can place anywhere on the screen. Its floats above all Apps so be careful where you place it:

So.... what happened in almost 5 months....?

Well on the original build nothing as I didn't like the location of the tablet in the dash after driving with it for sometime. I also tried the "on dash" location but was/ am concerned about the heat on the back of the tablet as I've posted elsewhere.

So that left me with the original location of the OEM SatNav screen. So as I was looking at the same location I thought about using the OEM screen, but, after purchasing the necessary interface cables and using the 753 hack I found the screen quality so scrapped that and decided on placing the tablet there instead.

Here's a picture of the original build:

So for this to work I needed the tablets FM radio to work. To get the FM radio working I tried various options. Basically, you need a headphone cable plugged in for the FM Radio to work as it acts as an aerial. However, I planned that the audio should be over the MHL/HDMI via the USB. Unfortunately this isn’t possible at least with the radio so I had to use the headphone out into the aux in socket, however, wired directly in the socket 25?? at the back of the stereo. The lead is sufficiently long to ensure that the FM radio can receive a decent signal by running it under the dash.

Power came from an existing hardwired cigarette lighter USB power supply so that’s easy. This isn't used in the pictures below.

The advantage of using the headphone out, or for that matter the BT interface if you choose, is that you can use the equalizer on the tablet to adjust the sound/tone. Another advantage of the headphone out is that when you switch the ignition off the music player and radio automatically stop because they sense that the headphones have been disconnected.

Volume control is via the tablet or the steering wheel controls so nice and simple. I am considering relocating the OEM volume control from the PCB and mounting it on the dash at some point.... but that will wait.

So as everything from the OEM stereo is replicated on the tablet, well the 6 disc CD changer isn't available but instead I have some 300 albums on the tablet

and streaming radio from around the world via TuneIn Radio. Most importantly the FM radio is there so I don't waste my data package streaming local radio.

I also decided that I wanted a more 2014 look to the dash so I looked to moving the heater controls in place of the stereo and deconstructing the stereo as before to hide it in the back much like what is discussed above and as Rumz has done.

I can’t actually finalise this as I need to exchange some of the parts with new piano black fascia for the hazard warning and heater controls. So until they arrive the dash will be black and grey… but it gives me time to finalise the design and perfect the finish, at that behind the fascia.

The hole below the heater controls will now be filled by a custom made ‘box’ which will mount to the existing points and be painted piano black. The backside will be insulated and padded to avoid it sound metallic as it’ll most likely be made from aluminium…

Also I've had a number of parts finished in noble chrome so that the interior will be colour coded. They should arrive shortly and will then be installed to develop things further.

Here's a couple of photos. The EPB is a 2012 version so in noble chrome as OEM. It gives you an idea of the quality.

The only area I’m not certain about is the shelf in front of the passenger seat above the glove box. The options are to close it off with a piano black fascia a bt like on the 2009 FFRR, or leave it open and finish it like the 2010+ models. Time will tell.

Not much of an update on the electronics, rather on the noble chrome parts.

I've now installed the central air vents, gear selector surround, EPB lever, dash vents (upper). Also the heater control dial surrounds Not on the photo are the door pulls and rear heater vents, etc.

Basically, everything that was either Brunel grey or noble chrome originally is now noble chrome except for the 2 dash glove box levers which still need to be done.

Generally, very happy with the result now need to get the final parts for the dash from PowerfulUK and then decide what to do with the trinket tray above the upper glove box... But I'm tending to close this off along the lines of the FFRR with a piano black panel and be done with it.

Also the final mounting of the tablet needs to be done so that I can get the surround finished and painted piano black also.

Okay so progress has been, and continues to be slow as I try and find the best solution...

The 8" tablet has been scrapped, because whilst it just fits I don't think it looks that good. This means I've lost the dedicated FM radio it offered, as well as about 30% screen real estate, and I'm back to internet radio (TuneIn Radio App). I don't particularly mind this myself, but, others may do as it eats data...

So back to a 7" tablet (Huawei MediaPad X1 or X2) which fits nicely. It doesn't have MHL or HMDI out so I'm using the headphone out for the audio.

The power (USB) and headphone (3.5mm) jacks both need serious cutting back to fit, but, if done carefully this isn't a problem and allow the tablet to fit in place of the OEM SatNav screen.

To get it to fit properly I 'bent'the 'tabs' at the front of the OEM SatNav case inwards to give a base for the tablet which is held in place with double sided elastic tape.

I'll post photos once I'm mobile again...

This ultimately allows for the OEM SatNav surround (with the buttons) to be reused, albeit drastically trimmed around the back and on the top so the full screen can be seen... But makes it very OEM.

Anyway here are some photos of everything in place, both in the shade and in direct sunlight.

The GUI has been updated also to something clearly and more 'simple'. I'll post more details as I can, especially photos of the cut back USB and 3.5mm jack as well as the modified SatNav frame and surround.
