Hi,

I'm soon to be in the lucky position of being able to purchase a RRS. My budget may stretch to a 2008 obviously dependent on mileage. I'm particularly interested in the TDV8 HSE/HST.

I have some of questions if I may dip into your vast RRS knowledge.

A) Other than the looks, are there any other differences in the HST compared to the HSE RRS? and is it really worth the extra premium being placed on used models?

B) What do I look out for when buying a second hand RRS? i.e certain rattles and squeaks etc. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade so not afraid to get under the vehicle when viewing potential purchases.

C) Is mileage really not important? I've seen 130k on some RRS's and they still fetch strong money but may be down a little.

D) Is full LR service history really that important and something I should look out for?

You help would be most welcome.

A very useful read thanks. Although I must admit now I'm a bit more nervous regarding RRS faults and reliability. My current steed is a BMW 5 series (E39) and has been bullet proof for the last 5 years. I hope I find similar reliability....

Ah, the old "German engineering" myth. My mk4 Golf had plenty of niggles and also lunched its gearbox.

There are plenty of people driving RRSs without issues just as there are plenty of BMW drivers with issues... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

That's a real shame, it maybe worth going for a RRS with full LR service history to hopefully lower the risk of a dog. Do you think this could be true?

I'd be more inclined to buy one off an established member here to be honest. One that has had all the usual expensive stuff done already.

A read here tells you that many main dealers are not what they should be either. Personally, I don't see the value in paying over the odds at a main dealer. But others seem to like the peace of mind they find in doing so.

Service history is a must IMO; for me it doesn't matter if it is a main dealer or an independent specialist. But again, opinions may differ on that. Get a 2005-2009 RRS (FAH500210) sat nav/dash mat here - the one that wasn't there when you bought the car.

Mine had a full LR service history. It didn't seem to help. The LR dealer I used didn't help matters though - I now use an indie; it may or may not be any better but at least it costs a lot less...!

One benefit of buying from a LR dealer is that you'll get LR's Extended Warranty in some form. I found that it paid for most things so that takes the sting out of it all.  2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Had mine for 2 years upto now, never had any problems, had to replace the battery but it was 6 years old, disc's, pads and tyres but there service parts which you expect !! Hanging onto a tree as I say all this
There are at lease 4/5 times as many Land Rovers on the road as BMW's and jap crap so you expect to see more L/R's in the garage for repair and there no more expensive to put right as the others. In most cases it's the labour that costs.. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

Had our 2.7 SE for 5 years and 60k miles no problems at all only routine service on the button by LR Dealer and for last two service by LR Independent. Really am hoping that the 2012 model we just bought as a replacement will be as reliable as the first. Having said that we also run a Discovery 4 to transport our German Shepherds and it too has never missed a beat. Service them on time and our experience is they are 100% reliable. For sure and after around 50 (some quite exotic) cars over the years I would never drive anything other than a RRS or a D4. In a couple of years when we change again guess it will have to be a FFRR, can't imagine an evoque on steroids RRS.
After that ramble, go for RRS ownership, BUT buy wisely inmho ONLY the newest highest spec main dealer warranted example you can afford. In the long run it will pay off . Steve H
