Battery warning light help...

Hey guys.

Just when you start getting somewhere sorting out your general maintenance and get your loved vehicle running how you want....bam!....another one!

In my second day of my red battery warning light being illuminated.
First day was intermittent, today it seems to be staying.
I've had no starting problems though.
I've run the diagnostic screens and with the car running, charging is fluctuating between 12.5v and 13.0v.
Is this normal or is my battery light being illuminated due to this being too low?
I have no other error codes, is that strange?
I'm thinking alternator?.....

I was born with a photographic memory. Shame it didn't develop!

Hi Gaz,

Good to meet you yesterday, BTW, and good to hear the light's still not on yet. Smile

If it's now dropping down to 12.5 with the engine running then that confirms that the alternator is indeed the problem. Thumbs Up

Must have just caught it at a good time with the DMM. As your battery was at 12.68, it would appear to be good, so best to get the alternator done before it takes the battery out with it. Wink

Does it have ACE? Question

If it does, you want this one: http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/dan-988-a...-424-p.asp

Or if not: http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/dan-987-a...0-74-p.asp

Yeah likewise.....great to meet you and your dad!

Yep.....I have ACE.

I'll take a look at the link now..... Thumbs Up

What should an alternator realistically be putting back in?

A good output will vary. Anywhere from the high 13s up to low 15s is OK. High 15s and up and it's too much. Low 13s downwards is bad too. Naturally, other vehicles vary (the 3.0 SDV6, for instance, charges at lower voltages). Wink

I would expect the voltage to be at the lower end of the good range as your battery seems good. That's why I thought the 13.7 or so I got from the multimeter was probably OK. As I mentioned, the diagnostic screen is really quite inaccurate (usually low, I think) hence not too worried about seeing 13 there but 12.5 is a definite problem. Thumbs Up

FWIW, our D3 (battery OK but could be better) charges at 14.2-14.5v. Wink Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Is changing the alternator with ACE that much harder than one without? I was born with a photographic memory. Shame it didn't develop!

Thumbs Up

Note, the voltage is far from accurate (but it can still give a general idea).

I presume from your posts that you have an HDC fault message etc.? Question

If so, you will indeed likely find the battery and/or alternator to be at fault but the only way to get a true reading is using a multimeter at the battery directly. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Correct, the engine has been turning a little slow over the last few weeks. However my brake sensors have activated and I will be changing pads and discs over the weekend. I will wait until then to see if it clears the gremlin.

A dicky battery or alternator can give you a few odd gremlins and false faults remember.
Mine was just on the cusp I think.
I started getting some odd things flash up and the radio did some odd things too!
After the alternator change, all went away! Thumbs Up I was born with a photographic memory. Shame it didn't develop!

So do you think I should get the battery and alternator checked before changing my brake pads and installing new sensor. What should the voltage read at the terminals?
Finally how much did you pay to have the alternator changed?

Thumbs Up

The alternator should be from high 13s to low 15s according to the battery's state of charge.

(Apologies if you already know this, but the battery should be left for a few hours to ensure allow the surface charge to clear before taking a reading.)

No need to hold back on the brake pads, once the sensors trigger, there's very little pad left so you can't hang around. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK
