Tailgate doesn't open properly - 2011

Hi all,

I have a 2011 (facelift) RRS and when opening the powered tailgate I press the button and it pops about 1/4" then gets stuck. If i get hold of it at this point i can bash it about between being shut and that point but it's hitting something metal to stop it from opening. I then have to force it shut into its catch so it winds itself back in again. Usually the only way to get it open is to lock and unlock the car several times.
I've got videos of it happening. The place it bought it from has had it in twice (non LR main dealer) and they've realigned and lubricated it all (twice) but to no avail. To me it seems like a locking mechanism issue or something to do with that part of the system.
Has anyone experienced this and if so do you have a known fix?

Thanks
RRS Noob, Mic.

Just for clarification - are we talking about a two piece tailgate and the problem being the " self closing/soft closing" latch at bumper level when you try to open the whole tailgate? 2011 TDV6 HSE Stornoway grey, ivory trim

Narp, tis one piece. RRsport not full size range, it's a powered tailgate.

OK - glad I asked - don't have any experience of one piece tailgate. Sorry! 2011 TDV6 HSE Stornoway grey, ivory trim

No probs thanks for getting stuck in anyway! I went into LR today and they've said it's not something they've seen before and it might be alignment. When I pull it open though it hits a piece of metal and only moves a quarter of an inch. There's no way, to me, that the alignment can move enough between opening it now and opening it in 7 minutes time (sometimes without the car moving too), so I think it's a failing part in the locking mechanism.

That'd be my guess too - presumably a solenoid should withdraw the locking "hook" and at the end of its travel make a contact to the tailgate opening motor. If when your tailgate jams at 1/4 inch, the motor doesn't start, that would seem to confirm a sticky solenoid which doesn't totally unlatch the locking "hook".

Same deal might be achieved by electronics with same result! 2011 TDV6 HSE Stornoway grey, ivory trim

I've not looked at it yet but I was thinking along those lines. I might get ballsy and strip it myself. Anything else I probably would but i'm worried of not being able to get it back together and shut it again!
I've built lots of mini's previously, but this is a different ball game.

Have you ever had the rear glass broken? Over on BabyRR.com we have had a guy who's ex wife didn't like that he had brought himself a new car and attacked the windows (he managed to stop her breaking all of them but she did smash the tailgate glass!) with a baseball bat. After replacement of the rear glass the tailgate would only open a tiny amount and had to be levered up.............. turned out that when the dealer had replaced the glass they hadn't cleaned all the small pieces of broken glass out from between the skins of the tailgate and some had dropped down into the lock mechanism and were stopping the lock form disengaging fully 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
