Jacking help

Decided to paint my rusty hubs and calipers. Bought a 3 tonne trolly jack, a special adaptor to go in the top, to fit the hole in the chassis, 2x6 tonne axcel stands, wire brush, wet & dry grit paper, had a good read on here for tips.
As per instruction, put the car in off road height, put it in park, handbrake on, chock the wheels.
I started to jack it up and the jack was very stiff to lift the car and the higher it went the harder it was to move. I managed to lift it so the wheel was just off the ground, placed the axel stand under to take the weight. Removed the front wheel, all seemed straightforward, I was weighing the job up, but I couldn't seem to spin the hub round, my thinking was to not put it in park, but neutral. The I got an emergency call so I had to put everything back. Couple of questions.

1, should a trolly jack be as hard as this, or could it be faulty.
2, do I put the car in N to spin the hub to paint.
3 if I have new Brake Discs fitted, am I wasting my time painting the rusty hubs

what jack do you have?
If its a Clarke 'quick lift' then yes, you will hae problems and its likely to twist.....

it needs to be really very high jack to get the front and back wheels lifting up.

the rear wheel will not turn if you either
a) dont have both rear wheels inthe air
b) have one wheel up but have the car in Park

Same for the front

Are you taking all four calipers off, or doing them in situ?

Spraying or Painting?

Are you doing the back plates too? In which case you will need to remover the disks. You may want to read the brake bible for that bit, especially the rear EPB shoes. Bodsys Brake Bible

Yes it is a Clarke quick lift !!!!! Does that mean I've wasted more money, read the reviews most people say it was very good and easy & 3 tonne was ample

They are ok if lifting just one wheel at a time, but seriously, they've just not strong enough for a 2.7t beast at that height.
The normal 3 t one is usually ok, but the quick lift ratio doesn't work reliably on these. Bodsys Brake Bible

This particularly relevant to a post I made a day or so ago look for an adapter for the Clarke jacks. Where did you get yours from as I'm after one and I know my post had a few responses for others keen to get their hands on one too?

I got the drawing off this site or the Disco site, and I was doing a job for a bloke who has a RRS and was telling him about the adaptor, so I sent the drawing to him and he made 2 out of stainless steel, but this crappy Clarke Jack has a slightly smaller hole in the top, so the adaptor didn't fit, so yesterday I took it to another engineering place local to me so they could turn it down in size to fit. I think if you have the drawing, any engineering company who has a Lathe will be able to knock one up, a steel one will do, but the stainless one looks the part, will try and get the drawing for you MY 13 3.0 SDV6 HSE Black Edition

Powerful and strong but it does tend to drop a bit suddenly when I lower it. It is holding up my nearside rear right now!

Hi, I'm looking to purchase an SGS jack too. Could you tell me if the stainless steel adaptor dimensioned above will fit the 3 ton SGS jack ok.
Is the location hole in the top of the Jack 30mm? With these dimensions i'll be able to make an adapter at my work.

Do - that jack has been shown not to be strong enough for a RRS/D3. The heavy duty version is good though. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

The SGS jack is also sold in Halfords with Halfords badges on it. I have one and it's great for the RRS. It does, as Paddi says, drop a bit suddenly when you release it. Hood bit of kit. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Had to wait until wheel refitted. Yes it's 30mm. Incidentally after a bit of research discovered that common reason for jacks dropping too fast is over tightening the valve after you've lifted. So I just tried only closing it gently after lifting. There was no problem with it drooping during use and then dropping was definitely much more controlled. Its natural to be tempted to overtighten with all that scary weight up in the air but it really isn't necessary.

Took the Quicklift Jack back to Machine Mart today and exchanged it for this one, can't believe how heavy this is, it looks a lot meater, for an extra £40. Can't believe how much money and time I am spending just to make my Hubs and Calipers look nice Shocked Shocked MY 13 3.0 SDV6 HSE Black Edition
