Delivery van driver with a difference............................... the truck weighs in at 90,000tonnes and does 30mph flatout at 95rpm. But it does carry 4500 twenty foot containers at one go! I am a ship's captain, hence the gaps in my presence here. Has it's compensations - the office is only 10m from my apartment size cabin and the nav bridge is one deck above. The getting there in the first place can be a long trip though...........

Here's the office/ van

Here's the view out of the window - on only one day in the voyage, every day the view is different!

And it isn't all sunshine and calms

Oh well, another paperwork day then?

Yup! They are front and back and called the 2nd mate and 3rd mate! and they start sqealing at about 150m off, unfortunately unlike the RR's I cannot switch them off, but they have been known to fail to report as well! Laughing

They are all locked together with special spring loaded double sided cones but sometimes they do fall down/ overboard but it has to be seriously bad weather.
Fortunately the damage and bad weather pix above were not from my ship but another company ship. Here's what it looks like when they fall down, bear in mind some of the containers weight up to 47 tonnes!

On my last voyage we passed very close to 5 tropical storms (about 250 miles off but it was still unpleasant) and pass right through the centre of typhoon Sanvu (Hurricanes and Typhoons are the same things in different parts of the world)
In 31 years at sea I have only seen 25 containers go over the side........ that was enough thanks as they all went in one big lump somewhere down in the south Indian Ocean between Cape Town and Fremantle round about 40 South, so if you are sailing down there watch out! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
