It's not the gearbox
I've replaced my gearbox & still have this noise.
Read my post about it. You'll see that it's the torque converter moving towards the gearbox.
I'm not sure how or why the torque converter can move towards the gearbox because its bolted to the drive plate which is bolted to the crank.
I measured the end float on the crank which is well within the tolerances.
Someone hopefully knows how & why this happens & now to fix it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You replaced it with a 2nd hand box IIRC. May be a worn pump inside the box, or something inside the box allowing the TC to move in and out

If you read this you'll see that Land Rover have admitted there is a design fault with the TDV6 engine & they say its characteristic to the RRS & Disco3

I replaced the transmission with a tested used transmission.
You can but a brand new transmission & fit that but it won't fix it.
I also fitted a brand new pump to my transmission but that didn't fix it.
The torque converter isn't fixed to the transmission so it's impossible that the transmission can move the torque converter.
The torque converter moves due to centrifugal force.
Check YouTube on how a torque converter works. It's easier than me trying to explane this.
If you go back to Land Rover get them to put your car on a 2 poster ramp & you'll see for yourself the torque converter flexing to flex plate which makes the noise.
Let me know how you get on.

I agree please keep us posted as the more info we can get the better chance of finding a fix.
Make sure you check the drive plate for cracks when you've removed the gearbox. I fitted a new drive plate although there was nothing visually wrong with mine.
If you get the chance measure the end float on the crank too.

Two-penneth !

An alternator can make this sort of noise under over-run conditions.

Do you get it when backing off at cruise speed in top gear when the tranny has achieved 'lock-up'.

Can you vary the tone by backing off quickly or backing off slowly?

I'm sure all you guys have checked but are you 100% sure the auto-transmission fluid is to the correct level ?

The supply of new gearboxes has dried up, so will have to be a re-con unit from Land Rover. Need to see what my VAT return is going to cost me, before I splash out Big Cry
