I'm pondering my first RR is quite a while (the last was a 1990 3.9 V8, owned from 1996 to 2000 - I've had a bunch of LR stuff over the years from a Series 1 onwards AND I was born in Solihull, so a lost cause from my first breath…)

Now, it seems to me, as a low miles per year man (probably less than 8,000 a year), that a TDV8 might be a fun piece of kit to own - I'm not overly tempted by a SC as an even whizzier petrol choice, but, whilst unlikely, it's not finally ruled out. But I'm averse to the dreaded DPF. Hence the question in the header.

Also, does the Group think that it is worth getting a 2009 model year onwards version with the better suspension is a noticeably better bet than the earlier versions?

I was in your situation where its low millage use. i really wantd the 3.6 but heard of issues with little use with the turbos and the dpf. i opted for the suppercharged in the end. very costly to run but this was outwayed in the saving upfront. I only put in about £20 per week in fuel as its just a weekend car.
The preference on here is if you are not doing more than about 7-8k a year get the petrol

A TDV8 with a good warranty makes sense, and it is a lot of fun.

IIRC, TDV8's didn't come with a DPF. It was brought out on the TDV6 3.0L models, so don't let the DPF put you off getting the TDV8. However, the turbos going bang would be my only real concern owning a TDV8.

I realise that contradicting a moderator is a risky game to play.....

BUT according to the workshop manual the DPF was optional on the TDV8 from MY 2008 onwards. So a simple way to tell on any individual vehicle is to have a look underneath at the exhaust system. Follow the downpipes from the engine down to where they pass under the floor and see how many big boxes there are with two pipes going in and two pipes coming out. If there is just one big one - DPF is not fitted. If there are two big boxes the smaller one nearer the front is the DPF.

I have an MY 2008 TDV8 and no DPF (thank goodness!) so that is one less thing to worry about. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks guys for the info and comments. I had suspected that DPFs were optional as I'm aware they weren't standard on Discos until about 2011 and Defenders until 2012 and I think TDV8s stopped being produced in 2010. That's a useful tip on how to check Paddi.

My car had cats but no DPF, current Fullfat doesn't have DPF either. Pain in the butt as you have to give it Dixie to clear them
The option was available but was only offered for certain markets, California and Switzerland spring to mind. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
