Engine popping noise 2.7Tdi

Hi all

I have a 57 plate RRS 2.7 tdi V6 with around 90k miles on it fsh from main agent. I noticed the other day a popping noise on idle from engine compartment. As engine revs the noise of engine drowns the noise out. No noticable change in power
Mpg etc A quick look by local garage says he thinks it's a cam
/ valve problem he says are a nightmare to replace and if this is true I should get rid or part ex! (haven't took to main agent yet - too afraid!)

Any ideas as I don't want to get rid??
