If you read the manual it tells you to move the wiper stalk up one notch. Nothing will happen until the windscreen gets wet.As i have said before do not leave it in auto mode overnight in cold and frosty weather. As soon as you turn ignition on, the wipers will try to operate. If they are frozen to windscreen they will get torn or the motor could burn out Big Cry itisme

You don't turn it up one notch, you move the lever up a tad Thumbs Up In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures

It seems odd it would just suddenly fail but I do know from a recent experience that when the sensor does fail the wipers revert to a normal delay function on the first click up. The sensitivity dial then simply adjusts the delay. As the OP says, you then have to turn them off manually as the delay function will continue to work whether the screen is wet or not.

All I can suggest from my recent experience is that you'll need a new sensor unless something else has been done to interfere with any wiring? It's easy enough to replace.

HTH.
