Sorry to hear of your dilemma this close to christmas Flatteraxe
Reading this I suddenly broke out in a cold sweat followed by feelings of gut wrenching sickness as I was transported back to a time last year when the very same had happened.
Accelerated off a roundabout BANG !!!!! Loss of power plus smoke , pulled into lay by that was luckily just off the roundabout.
Took a look and oil was running out of air filter box
After recovering to a specialist ( whom I cannot speak highly enough of ) left hand turbo shaft seized then exploded dumping the shrapnel around the intercooler and finally into the engine
Sorry I just need a moment whilst my wife gets me my sedative before I start to sob uncontrollably !
I think the oil is as result of the sudden pressure differential / oil and exhaust gas being blown around intake and boost side after the spectacular self destruction .
Well that's enough of my misery , with regard to your dilemma your garage I fear is not to far off the mark with their diagnosis
He's probably saying you need both turbos only because once you start getting into this ( body off ) you may want to replace the other one whilst your there.? ( your already spending the money getting the body off )
My specialist got turbos new from Borg Warner direct for approx 8 - 900 and body off and on job is around 11 to 12 hrs work.
My advice to you would be make sure of exactly what happened in that turbo, if its just seals gone then OK, but if any destruction then make sure they trace how far it's gone around that engine !!!!!
Hope it doesn't put to much of a downer on christmas

Absolutely awesome vehicle , but GET A FLAMING WARRANTY Same Sh-t different day just the depth that varies !

And make sure the oil feed pipe is replaced while its in bits

OK so I got my car back on New Years Eve. It is driving ok but still making a strange noise, in fact the same noise I was investigating when the turbos went!

Its like a whirring, groaning noise that seems to be coming from underneath the car and gets louder with the revs. It isn't always there and seems more prevalent in gears 2-3. Now, the garage that did the turbos said the seal was slightly misaligned on the gearbox and I was losing transmission fluid. This was a problem first picked up by Land Rover who told me it wasn't urgent, could it be the gearbox? It sounds like something sucking in air very fast which brings me onto this next little snippet:

Today as I drove off my driveway the suspension fault light came on. The suspension seems to be working ok as it is in normal height mode. The light was first yellow but now seems to be flicking between yellow and red, when it is red it says 'suspension problem, max speed 30mph'. The strange thing about this is that I had a new compressor unit about 7 weeks ago. Could it be a leak somewhere?
