Lots of posts re. Winter tyres including one where it was suggested that if one has to choose one set of tyres then choose winter tyres.

I have an 2011 TDV6 currently 27,000 miles so new tyres soon. Spend Oct to Apr in the Home Counties and bits of the Summer travelling to Western France. Lets say 4,000 miles on the continent mainly summer and 4,000 winter miles in the UK.

Which should I do?

1. When I replace do I go for what was on the car from new?
2. Replace with an all round general purpose tyre? - If so which one?
3.Replace with a set of winter tyres which will also be good in the wet and keep them on all year?
4.Buy a set of each and wheels to go with the Winter set?

cost would be an issue I don't see option 4 as viable for me.

I keep some snow socks in the car in case of get caught out in snow.

Thoughts appreciated.

How about something like the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season? It's being fitted by LR to some models as standard these days. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Some grabber at's would be an option. Last about 40000 miles. They're quite cheap and are a true all season tyre.

Are the Grabber ATs fairly quiet on road surfaces and do you think they might compare to the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season mentioned above.

My dad replaced his pirellis with grabbers on his disco 4. He hated the pirellis as the traction off-road was terrible, not that great in the winter either. I've never noticed an increase is cabin noise but I'm sure it must be a bit louder, just not noticable to me.

Surely it really depends on where the car spends most of its time and how you use it. Me for example in the soft shandy drinking South where it hardly ever snows and in the SE bit which is also the driest corner of the country; off-roading is restricted to the Rugby Club overspill car park in a field and if the weather is bad I can work at home.

The Grabber is noisier than a standard road tyre. Also the mpg drops a couple of mpg.

The beauty of the he Verde is that it's an all-season tyre so you can do the whole year old n one tyre. If you need yo go a little off road (it's a 15/85 tyre according to Pirelli) and on wintery roads then it looks like a good compromise. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I've just bought some Nokian WR SUV 3 in a 50 profile for my 19s. Hopefully getting fitted today, will report back on how they are. They've reviewed well and look fairly aggressive, went for these over the wintracs after reading a lot of people struggle with them offroad.
