I don't think it's rubbish - if criminal breaks in your house to get keys and threatens you or takes your car without any evidence of break in which do you think is a police priority Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

Huh?

Now you are being ridiculous.

If someone steals your 80k car or beats you up for the £100 in your wallet, which takes priority? Answer = immediately the physical attack, but after the initial "are you ok" what more do you want or expect? A hug?
Your car on the other hand, is a huge expense that causes great ongoing inconvenience for many reasons. So I would be more bothered about this.

Regardless of all of this, car manufacturers make cars to transport you. If is the job of the police to catch criminals and prevent crime not any manufacturers. Do you want manufacturers to make cars unstealable so instead of keyless thefts, we are here discussing the punishment for stabbings of people being pulled from cars or in their homes to get their keys?

We have to be reasonable. These people are clearly not worried about their actions, I don't think they would think twice.

My RRS has a tracker fitted (by the LR dealer I bought it from) as my insurance co. insisted. No fobs or otherwise required. It just phones home (the tracker co.) if the vehicle moves when the engine isn't running - when I was trailered home a few months ago the tracker company rang me within minutes to say my vehicle was moving. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thatcham 5 requires fobs, 6 doesn't. I think.

But Tracker didn't call me when I crossed the Channel on a ferry.

They know where the vehicle is - perhaps they know that it's on a ferry so assume that you're with it as it drove there "legally". Certainly, when I told them that my RRS would be going to the dealership the next day on a flatbed, they said they would only call me if it went anywhere other than Oxford (where the garage is). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

So,suppose someone swipes the car starting it via the odp port, drives it onto the ferry for the Ukraine, how long will it take Tracker to wake up and realise that the car had been stolen? I drove to Germany and no one coughed.

And I also went on the Eurotunnel afterwards to Maastricht without a peep from Tracker!

Yes, thank you for the clarification.

Turns out Thatcham 5 is superior to Thatcham 6 just as Thatcham 1 was superior to Thatcham 2 in that Thatcham 5 can have (requires?) the separate fob and has the ability to remotely prevent the car starting at police request, neither of which apply to Thatcham 6.

The LR InControl Secure system is rated Thatcham 6 and according to their documents, is standard on the RRS from the middle of this year.

The problem with Thatcham 6 is that it's not going to help you if someone has access to the car, clones a key and drives it away, especially if they are able to do so without activating the alarm, which is what these thefts are all about and as soon and you have a valid key, the alarm is disabled and all is fine.

The whole point of the fob is that there's an alert if the car moves without the engine running AND if the car moves with the engine running but WITHOUT the fob inside the car. It's of course the responsibility of the driver to keep the fob and key separate, no point at all if the two are tied together.

It would certainly be interesting to know whether InControl Secure is helping stolen cars to be located after a key-clone drive away. Can the vehicle tracking be activated remotely if the car is being driven normally with a cloned key?

It sounds to me like the InControl Secure should be upgraded to Thatcham 5 in addition to the car being hardened to prevent key cloning. Mark

On leaving the UK by ferry with my new RRS .on UK export plates... two weeks ago..

I was randomly pulled over... I must say not many cars seemed to be getting pulled over... 1% to 2% max perhaps

I was asked if I was the owner but the officer didn't ask to see my documents......

A quick cursory look round the car and that was it..... I was good to go...

If your going to pull a car over for an inspection and questioning , how much more lame can it get..... 2014.5 SDV6 AB Dynamic ... Fuji /Santorini Pan roof and 22's

Couldn't agree more Andman!

Surely with everything being on central databases these days, a request for your ID, a check of your plates to see if your insurance on your vehicle matches your personal details and one step further a check of the VIN in the dash or even on the door build plate, for the extra couple of minutes would be worth it.

Once they catch the handful of theives doing this and actually prosecute them properly, the numbers being stolen should drop dramatically. Plus like most criminals, give out big enough punishments, at some point one of them will roll over on other members of their organisation and give good intelligence even if most don't.

Alternatively, maybe replace your odb port with a look-a-like that when anything is plugged in just sounds a very loud alarm and activates a hidden camera pointing directly from the passenger side at the drivers side.

Police seem to have dumbed down dramatically. Wouldn't be too difficult to set up sting operations, they must know which areas are most likely to get thefts and set up some well hooked up vehicle with additional trackers and cameras. Wouldn't even need to watch it 24/7 if it was set to alert them the moment any door was opened and it had GPS trackers.

The problem with the police's attitude regarding car theft, unless they catch the thieves red handed, they are not intrested unless they can have a car chase. Two reasons for this, 1, Just watch Police Interceptors on TV. You will see what i mean. 2, If you report your vehicle as stolen, they aren't intrested in coming round to take a statement, they just give you a crime number over the phone so that your insurance can deal with it from then on. Thats their attitude, your insured aren't you sir..... Then thats all that matters to them. Mr. Green Another lump in the throat, is just listen to the punishment that is dished out to the little scumbags who have just stolen a vehicle, driven at high speeds breaking all the rules in the book, ended up crashing the car and writing it off, and obviously having no insurance or licence, not the 1st time they have done it, and get off with £150 fine and banned from driving for 12 months even though they don't own a licence in the first place. Whistle They should be made to pay for a replacement vehicle, and cover all your insurance losses. Thumbs Up So what have these scumbags got to lose in the 1st place before they steal a vehicle? The law is too lenient and these scumbags know it. Untill its changed, then we will always have this problem.

Stepping down off my soapbox now. I feel much better now i've got that off my chest. Very Happy

Hi All,

I can certainly appreciate the concerns this subject has raised.

Land Rover is aware of a rise in the number of thefts of Land Rover products. The current Land Rover line-up continues to meet the insurance industry requirements as tested and agreed with the relevant insurance bodies, nevertheless the company has taken this issue very seriously and our engineering teams have been working in collaboration with insurance bodies and police forces to fully understand the attack risks facing Land Rover models. It is however important to remember that this is an industry-wide issue and not specific to Land Rover vehicles only.

We have released a number of security updates in the last 12 months and have further updates due this year. We are continually updating and improving our security systems to ensure we stay ahead of the criminals and the industry-wide problem which the motor industry in general is tackling on a daily basis.

Many thanks,
Pete Please note although Land Rover will try to assist you with your issue, we are unable to provide any technical advice. This account is available between 0900 and 17:00 hours Monday – Friday. Outside of this time if you require assistance, please drop us a Private Message and we'll get back to you.

So this tells me that the Insurance industry needs to catch up with the criminals, because their standard isn't up to the criminals taking these vehicles, they seem to be always one step ahead. Have any of the vehicles that have had these updates been stolen since?

To me, its a simple solution, go back to the old fashon key and also make the OBC /ECU only accessable by that key for that vehicle. Thumbs Up
