Easy like Sunday morning.

So here is how my Sunday went.

Yup. Trundled off to get the papers this morning, heard a bang from the NSF, as I stopped the cars wheel locked up. Managed to limp it to a parking spot accompanied by a noise that sounded like bricks in a tumble dryer.

When owning one of these, its always nice to have a pal with a recovery truck. Rolling with laughter

So tomorrow we find out if its brake/disc related or something more sinister to do with driveshafts or something. At least it has been a couple of months since the last breakdown. Whistle

*sigh*

Its a funny thing, any other car that needed as much work at the mileage of mine (50 something) would have been in the Auto Trader faster than anything.

But what a cracking car when it works. Where normally I would be swearing at something so poorly engineered, I had it collected by a pal and it costs what it costs to fix - with a shrug of the shoulders. I think you gotta be like that with these.

The bloke who owns the recovery truck just paid £35k for a newer one and it has had a grandsworth of the usual stuff already in the first month. Its about his tenth one. Every one he had has cost money in a similar manner.

We are gluttons for punishment really. But who wants an X5? Not me......

Which it seems is the front diff. Shocked

Managed to procure a late low miles used one from a friend of a friend for £300 and the geezer who has it wants £200 to do it.

Does anyone know what causes a diff to conk out at 50k miles? Or are they just pants?

Known issue. The early ones were painted internally and this flakes and contaminates the oil causing failure. Mine had two replaced due to leaks, third due to bearing failure but make sure it's stripped and all paint removed before fitting and that correct oil is used, that part is critical!!! 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

So I now have my car back.

It seems I got off lightly due to pals in the job. My pal recovered it for free. He called his mate who knew a bloke who had some late model used spares.

Two days later a late model diff arrived. It was fitted by some backstreet place [friend of a friend] who also fitted rear pads, freed off the caliper, fixed the squeaky hand brake I didn't use and turned all the lights out.

The car is fixed, new front diff, rear pads, sensor, freeing off the caliper, sorting out the handbrake. £650 all in. Mates rates.

I expect the only way is to remove and strip, steam the inside and rebuild. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
