Hello!

Just bought a 2012 V8SC RRS. Since I drive 6 months per year on snow, I am wondering how the range will behave on descents?

I had a freelander before and the going down slippy roads was not a problem but the range is much heavier.

It will be fitted with 255 19' snow wheels.

On winter tyres it is really very good. For steeper descents, you can use hill descent control HDC and adjust the speed using the cruise control speed adjust buttons. 2013 RRS SDV6 Autobiography Fuji White

If it's on winter tyres and you make use of Terrain Response - Snow/Grass/Gravel then you'll find that it uses HDC when you're in the correct speed range. It'll also give a much softer throttle response which gives less chance of wheel spin when starting off. It changes the TC/DSC settings too.

You can use HDC without selecting a Terrain Response setting if you wish, by the way but you'll get the default throttle and TC/DSC settings.

Even if you just leave it all in "road mode" you'll find that with winter tyres it'll be quite secure. I would use HDC on steeper descents - anywhere where you're going to be going slowly anyway and might need the brakes to control the speed. It's better to go down slowly but under total control in my opinion - as you say, the RRS is heavy and once it starts sliding...

Overall, I'd expect it to be no worse than your previous FL experience. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

It weighs 3 tonnes so don't expect miracles, especially on ice - that's a lot of momentum. Do everything very gently and you'll find there's not much will touch it for ability.

Biggest problem is that not all other motorist will be as well equipped and if they stop so will you !!

The HDC was indeed fine on the FL, a bit too slow maybe where I leave everybody is well equipped (in Switzerland you have snow and money )
I would love to find data about breaking distances on snow for the range!

Braking distances will be tyre dependent. I would expect that with the right tyres it'll be little different to the FL.

Tires will be Michelin la2.

Sometimes I drive to Vevey at Christmas and I have never had any trouble. You are rite that driving in Switzerland everyone is prepared for snow. I have Michelins on mine and had no problems with them. My last sport had Pirellis which were brilliant . My sister lives there so accommodation is very reasonable.  MY11 Autobiography supercharged. Wow, you're from weymouth (England?) and you know our little city of Vevey! This is where I work

but the road you took to get to this city is a highway and I live up in the mountains in a ski resort... Where driving is much more challenging sometimes

It's as much about your own driving ability in the snow and knowing your limitations, and the cars capability and understanding

the roads your driving on.

On the descent three tons can be tricky, full stop... I have had a few close escapes but overall the RR with snow tyres
