I did consider finger trouble, which is of course the more sympathetic explanation However, with it being a renewal and therefore more than likely 100% computer generated and posted it's either a bug in the software that doesn't understand a renewal policy should start when the one it's renewing finishes, or....

I doubt they would think "oh, let's put a break of 10 hours between policies to save money". After all, as you say, with a renewal the expectation of the customer is that the cover is seamless. Should a claim occur for an accident then the insurance company could find they end up having to pay anyway (after a court case) plus being done over by the Insurance Ombudsman.
