Speedo discrepancy?

In a nutshell, my speedo reads 70 and when I put my cruise on, it reads 72? (i.e the digital speedo on the cruise reads 72 )

edited as I got the figures around the wrong way

So, guess we all have to be careful through the speed traps then as our speedo's read wrong!

Speedometers on most cars are optimistic reading higher than your road speed so if your speedo say 70 your road speed will be lower ( and you'll be inside the law.

I think Type Approval construction regs say the accuracy has to be 10% at 30mph.

But it's the other way round unless I am confusing myself. My speedo says 70 but cruise says 68 and i guess my cruise is more accurate in which case when my speedo says 70 I am actually doing 72

I've just done a test on way home.

Set cruise at 70mph on the dash.
Speedo shows less than 70mph (I'd say one little line less)
Reset computer and average speed says 67.8mph

I should of put a GPS device on to see what that said too.

Im gonna try my TomTom and see who is lying - speedo or GPS! I know you get a fudge factor with speed limits, but don't want to be doing 70 when I am actually doing 72/73!

Read that again. You've just confirmed that your cruise is more accurate than your speedo so, if your cruise says 68 when your speedo says 70 then you're likley to be doing 68, not 72. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Yes you're correct - I knew I confused myself!. When I have had my TomTom on with other cars, my speedo has always read higher (i.e speedo says 70, TomTom says 6Cool where as this is the other way around (i.e speedo says 70, cruise says 72)

I got the original post the wrong way around! my mistake.
