United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HST Java Black
Grey/White Smoke, Sulphur Smell, Rattling and now won't star

Hi all,

I have a 2008 TDV8. Last night I had a short journey to make. The car started fine. When I pulled up at the lights, the car was vibrating badly and the idle tickover dropped. As i pulled away the car had lost power. I then heard a rattling sound from under the car. The "Engine System Fault" message appeared on the dash, so I pulled over and turned the engine off.
I noticed some grey/white smoke from the exhaust and a strong sulphur smell.
Now the car will turnover but won't start. The car is on the drive ready to be picked up by the dealer, but I wondered if anybody had experienced anything similar.
My main concerns are turbos or the cat.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks.

Blown turbo. When mine blew there was white smoke and that rather unpleasant smell. No rattle though. Mine would start and idle, albeit very poorly. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

thanks for the reply.
That was my initial thought however the dealership have take a look and they believe an injector has failed.
Once replaced and tested, I will update this thread.

Quick update on this.

Body currently off, engine out and is being stripped down next week.
Looks like a broken connecting rod or bent/broken con rod. If this is the case, it would explain why the piston crashed in to the injector which broke the tip.

More to follow.

having just bought the V8 I have notice a few threads on about turbos.
Is this a common fault with them ?? If so anything to avoid or watch out for ??

hi,

Just over 60k with a FSH.
Literally used for school runs, I think it's been on the motorway twice in the last two years so seldom goes over 3k RPM.
We're having the engine replaced and replacing the turbos as a precaution.
