Hi all,

I've got a yellow suspension warning light that comes on every now and then when driving on normal roads (message is "suspension fault - normal height only" if memory serves).

I've checked the battery's OK, the height sensors report they are OK (according to the touch screen display), did a full lock-to-lock just in case the steering sensor needed resetting and over night the car doesn't drop at all so I need to delve in a bit further.

Before I take the car over to have it looked at, I'd like to get an idea of what might be up (compressor etc). I'm looking for a cheap and cheerful OBD device that will let me know what's wrong - son number 2 born three weeks ago so not in the market for an IID

Can anyone point me at something sub-£100 that would fit the bill? I was thinking something like the OBDLink SX - will that do the trick in helping identify the problem?

You get what you pay for. Anything sub-£100 or so will only be a fancy OBD tool.

See if you can find a 2nd hand IID, and have it re-licensed

Sorry it took so long to reply. Further investigation shows that it isn't the readers as such that are the problem but the software behind them - the cheap PC software out there doesn't seem to include Land Rovers (but you can get modules for GM, Ford or Mazda). As you said: fancy OBD tool.

I looked into a 2nd hand IID but sill couldn't justify the cost (our baby takes all beer tokens at present).

I did however find a rather cheep £28 Mongoose Pro VCI from China - I'll be the first to admit that I can't be positive it's 100% genuine, however it is really really well engineered. I won't mention the software that was supplied with it but it was the latest v138, had all the July updates (VDF/SPA etc), identified the VCI perfectly first time and worked like a dream.

No matter what, I strongly advise purchasing only genuine products from reliable sources. This time I would say I was lucky - you never know what might have happened, I got my fault code and saved myself some £££ as I can change the compressor myself.

Could you please recommend me one obd tool for a range rover sport 2005-2009?
I googled mongoose but not much info.

So I received the gadget yesterday and I tried to read my 2005 RRS suspension errors. I found 2 errors 100% matching and 1 error 33% matching. Here is what I found:

U0416-86 RLM INVALID DATA RECEIVED FROM VEHICLE DYNAMICS CONTROL MODULE. 100%

C1A34-01 RLM REAR RIGHT CORNER VALVE. 100%

U0300-55 SASM INTERNAL CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE INCOMPATIBILITY. 33%

I am trying to locate the rear right valve to check it if it is ok or not. However I couldn't find anything online to help where to find it. Any help would be appreciated.

The rear corner valves are in a single valve block that lives on the left rear suspension turret. If you jack the left rear and remove the wheel you can see it. It's probably easier to get at if you remove the spare wheel and access it from that side. A new valve block is about £100.

Thank you for the quick answer. The information I got with the fault code reader is that it could be Electrical Fault. I will try to locate the cables that lead to the rear valve and see. Wish it is just a cable messing around.

Finally I decided to take the car to the dealer to be fixed because I didn't have the right tools to lift the car to work under it.. And indeed they found the same codes as I found with my tool mentioned here. They repaired only the cables connected to the harness close to the valve. They charged me 489 eur. Including calibration. It hurt to pay that amount but it is too late. I just wanted to update you guys.

Had the same issue as you did on my Disco 3, and fixed the compressor with epoxy.
