Time for the 3 Litre V6 SC?

Diesel cars have been getting bad press in the UK recently because of the pollution they create: lower CO2 but higher Nox and particle emissions compared to petrol. Climate change or lung disease, which is the most or least important?

Having first promoted diesel cars as if CO2 is the only thing that matters, it would be electoral suicide for the Government now to aggressively curb diesel use but I feel sure there will be some moves against it, to the extent of banning pre Euro 6 cars from city centres, tightening up MOT compliance, DPF replacement, taxing diesel more, maybe a scrappage scheme to get the worst cars off the road.

Over here in LR land, there's hardly any petrol use and I'm wondering if things develop in this direction, whether LR will make the smaller 3 litre V6 SC available here as it is in other markets. In the existing tax regime, there's not much of a case - similar power, worse consumption but if we had a situation where even a diesel RRS bought recently (non Euro 6 compliant) could not be taken into London or Bristol, the petrol engine would be viewed in a more favourable light.

Does anyone know how LR is going to make their engines Euro 6 compliant? Will they use AdBlue? Mark

Ingenium will be Euro VI compliant.

It's a modular design - each cylinder is 500cc and they are talking of having everything from a 1.5L up to a 3L version apparently. I've read that the thing is designed so that the petrol and diesel units are very similar - shared block and ancillaries etc. - so that they can swap between production output more easily and quickly.

It's also going to have chain driven cams with variable valve timing and one or two turbo units as required. This suggests that tuning options will be available too.

There is talk of a FFRR having been tested with a 2L Ingenium engine and the RRS2 is rumoured to be getting the 2L too. The Discovery Sport will be getting 2L Ingenium after the initial launch phase is completed. Presumably this will be diesel. I can see a 2L Euro VI-compliant RRS selling very well in the home counties and London.

The one thing I haven't seen yet is how they are achieving Euro VI. My guess is a storage catalyst (a bit like a DPF apparently) rather than AdBlue but I hope I'm wrong. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I wonder if selling RRS2 in both All Wheel Drive ( without the transfer box) and "Dynamic" versions is a way to lessen the shock to buyers that don't really need full on 4WD now than to bring too many technologies in with the new engines all at the same time. I would doubt a 2.0lt engined RRS2 would have the power/ torque for the extra weight and frictional losses of an RRS with a transfer case. RRS2 is available in a few markets where there are only petrol variants available, with the 3lt V6 S/C. IIRC 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I would expect the diesel 2litre Ingenium to be as powerful/torquey as the old 2.7TDV6 was by the time LR install it in the bigger vehicles. The RRS2 is also lighter than the RRS1 which helps the engine.

Having said that, for most people a high-range-only RRS would be more than enough. Hell, for most a 2WD RRS would be enough. Most people in the south east aren't buying them for their 4x4 ability but rather the badge, the styling and the comfort. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
