I'd rather a higher mileage, well serviced Sport than a low mileage car so I'd go for as new as you can sensibly afford.

Keep a bit of capital back for a check over and warranty.

I know it's the vehicle iv always wanted and it's as safe as a tank for my future family but the costs of repairs put me on edge.

Knowing things could go wrong that could cost me thousands puts me of but doesn't this happen with any car? It's like some of you guys said it's a machine and machines break time to time just Gota hope it's not the important parts.

I was considering renting one for the weekend to see if I like the drive style and will give me a insite into running costs...

What you guys think??

I couldn't agree more, go for it Tommo, but remember that we need to see some pics ........ when you find the right car of course. For your budget and the economy that you need it will almost certainly be a 2.7 TDV6 but there are lots around. Just don't rush it. A warranty is also pretty important to minimise the risk of expensive repairs. If you search this forum you can learn more about them.

Thanks rrs! I will most definitely keep you guys up to date with it!

Do you think it would be a good idea to rent a 2.7 first to see how I get along with it and stuff?

I think there is some places close buy to me that you can rent from but want a 5kg upfront deposit which is reasonable for a 50k car.

The 2.7 is what I was looking at and have seen some nice ones on this forum! I would rather buy from someone on here who has looked after it and gave it the love they deserve!

The hard truth is things on these cars break. This is not Audi, Mercedes or BMW. Spending circa £15k buys you an early one. Even one that was looked after will cost money to fix because stuff breaks.

And nothing is cheap. Example: Suspension pump circa £500. I bet everyone here has replaced theirs. If not, it will be pending.

Again no. Even a decent local general mechanic wont have the gizmos to plug these in, or the product knowledge to repair them in a cost effective manner. You need an independent specialist or one of the travelling chaps on here.

Lets cut to basics: If you can shrug your shoulders at a thousand quid repair bill two or three times a year, and maybe a bit more if you are unlucky, then you can afford it.

If you have to wonder about fuel economy, you cant afford it. If you have the capability to fill it up when it's empty, not know how much is a litre, and forget how much you last put in, then you can.

That said: I'm not one to put you off a dream. When I was 23 I was running a six litre Pontiac Grand Prix. I was unlucky, I copped for an engine rebuild on that. At the time it floored me financially as many of the parts had to come from the States - in pre internet days. But I loved the car and worked harder in order that I could own it.

If you decide to take the plunge, the chaps on here are all a great source of help and information. Ask a question and they will save you money.

I think Stuart is right. 2k per month and owning an RRS, especially an older one, I wouldn't sleep at night. Keeping it until you have your family would be a long time.

Wait until you have a few more pounds and buy a facelift model in 2 or 3 years. In the meantime, buy something small, cheap to run and Japanese reliable. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

Ok let's go the other way - the Sport is a poorly built British failure - over priced - over rated - costs a fortune to run & always breaks down - you won't sleep at night worrying about the next repair bill - don't buy one get a 14 plate Ford Focus instead with your cash Thumbs Up

How many of you would advise your son / daughter with a mortgage and a young family and an income of £2k a month to buy one? If it was my kid id be advising a run of the mill family car until he / she was more financially secure. Lets get real...He cant afford it. Simple. Even if he buys a reliable one and incurs no repair bills, Fuel and insurance are prohibitive.
To the OP, don't get one YET, keep looking on here...Try putting atleast £150 a month in the bank for 9 months..and if you can do that without missing or touching it...then maybe just maybe you could afford to run one if your not doing many miles a day. Gone but not forgotten, 2005 RRS SC first edition, BMW 2010 Z4,TVR Tamora, TVR Cerb, MERC SL 55 AMG, E46 M3, Z4, Jag S type R, Skyline R33 GTR 640 bhp, Evo FQ 400, L322 RR, X5, Lotus Esprit V8 twin turbo, Lotus Elise 135r, Nissan Murano, Honda S2000, 911, Boxster s...and a few more

Sorry to add to the reality comments just made but they are all spot on. Stuart has summed it up really well, I have owned mine for a year now, almost to the day. In that time it has had all of the common faults you will read about on here from air compressor to ARB bushes and new suspension legs (x2). Last week it cost me 1700 quid to have a load of work done, if being hit with that kind of bill is going to break a mortgage payment then this is not the right time for you. I do as much work on the car as I can myself and as Stuart says the site here saves you a fortune - but I have still spent north of £3k in 12 months just on keeping the thing going. That doesn't include insurance, tax, tyres or fuel.

Yes you can buy an RRS for 15k but remember it is is still a 60k car underneath and when it goes wrong it costs a 60k car bill not a 15k car one, there is so much to go wrong on them that the reality is stuff will. Yes you can always sell it if it gets too much - but if the reason for that is because you can't afford the repair you will be trying to sell a car which is broken and will therefore be worth nothing!!

Seriously go and look at spending 10k on a 3.0 D X5 and run that of a few years, it will do 40mpg and any local garage can do most of the repairs, that is what I did when I was in exactly your position and had the same debate. Glad I made that decision as running the RRS back then would have crippled me, trust me there have been lots of days when I wish I never sold it.

If a suspension compressor failing and costing £500 is the difference between laughing with your mates about yet another bill and not being with your mates because you can't afford a pint down the pub due to said bill that is the best bit of honest advice I can give.....

If you decide to go for it then I am sure we will all speak again soon, the support here is great. If you do one thing though, read up on here for weeks before you take the plunge. Get to know what to look for and make sure all the common noises are missing from your purchase! TDV8 Java Black, Overfinch 22s

At 23 and earning well over £30k per annum is good going man, well done.

I was doing well at 23 (that's now 20 years ago!!) and in my first 10 years of career success I blew loads of cash on cars. My family came at about 33 years of age and since then (even though my earning has grow dramatically in that time) I wish I could have half the cash back I wasted on cars.

I can't even justify the running costs of an RRS now. I drive a diesel BMW touring.

I wish I could have a talk to my 23 year old self right now and talk myself out of spending loads of money on cars.

Get something sensible. Get focused on your career, make a bucket load of money and then buy a RRS when you don't even need to think about the cost.
