I bought my RRS from a dealership 4 weeks ago but it had a private plate on it so I never got the log book, the garage sent away the form to request one and paid the £25 but I got a letter today asking lots of questions and requesting pencil rubbings of the VIN number! Has anyone else had this? I have had numerous Novas with no log books that iv sent away for and had to take my old corsa to VOSA to get it back on the road but iv never had this request from the DVLA before so I'm rather worried.

I have no idea where to look on my sport for them anyway, if anyone could tell me?

No-way you could get at it for a 'pencil' rubbing and its been like that on most cars for some time !

Not unusual for DVLA to request an inspection when removing a plate, had it loads of times when I have had to take vehicle to local Vosa centre especially when the car was first registered on a cherrished plate so a pencil rubbing is saving you a trip to Swansea as most local DVLA offices are now shut.
Should be the dealer doing this, not sure where the 25 quid is coming from, that's usually for a replacement log book, £85 to transfer a plate directly to another vehicle, £105 to put on retention.
The chassis plate is in the engine bay left side, previous poster does seem to like doing things in a strange way  2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

Thanks the dealer is totally avoiding me now which is rather frustrating.

The £25 was for a replacement logbook, it just has the original plate on it just now as the old plate is on a new car now.

I managed to phone and talk them out of needing it after I failed to find the VIN in the same place as my old car. But I'm dreading having to go through it again when I put my plate on!

Oh another note there is a VOSA place on the M6 just outside carlisle surely they would only make me go there instead of wales?

I think Vosa are taking on some of local offices duties now so fingers crossed. Lucky enough our local Vosa centre is two mins from old DVLA office. It's usual practice to get photo copy of V5 with cherrished plate from a dealer if no book supplied with car to avoid this situation. Even though plates fitted it may be case transfer not completed. I know the last transfer I did took nearly 8 weeks. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

The VIN is also stamped on the chassis rail below the diver's door. There is also a VIN plate in the engine bay by the bonnet catches. Anyone can take a picture of the VIN on any car - the one in the windscreen - I assume the DVLA think that only the owner will have access to the other VINs and thus a rubbing is more likely to be from the owner.

I think it's strange logic on their part but hey... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
