England 2009 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black
Smoke ?

I was following the other half today (She was in the RSS. TDV8).

I noticed that occasionally a puff of black smoke came from the right hand exhaust when accelerating. Not much, and only for a couple of seconds.

When I got home, I started the car and gave it a good hard revving......... Nothing....... Totally clear.

Any idea's chaps ?.................... Anything to worry about ?

Hi Pete i don't think it is a problem it might be just clearing the pipes when you put your foot down

Not a good idea to rev the wassits off it when stationary you can get local hotspots in the engine and turbochargers which can 'locally' cook the oil.

Could be now't - depends how big a 'puff' and for how long.

How many miles has it done and are they mostly short runs in traffic.

I'd be inclined to give it a tankful of the premium diesel from the likes of BP or Shell or try a dose of aftermarket injector cleaner

It has 37K on the clock, and is used by the missus to go to work and back.............. 5 miles each way.

It had a good run out last weekend towing the tin tent for 120 miles, and I do tend to give it the beans when I have it................. That V8 is addictive !

The puff of smoke is no more than 2 seconds, and there's not much of it.

It hasn't had a service for 13 months, but has only done 3K miles since the last one.

I would be having it serviced pronto. 13 months is too long although I think the interval is 1 year in Blighty whereas its 6 months over here. Good service, a tank of nice diesel, a good Motorway run and see how she goes. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

5 mins each way, there's the problem. It's full of its own fumes as it doesn't get hot enough for system to clear itself. Take it in a ling run so it's fully warm, then give it some beans. You will be amazed how blocked up the intake systems become and how much oil will collect in system if only run cold. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

The TDV8s that have had a remap are very prone to a discharge of black smoke on acceleration...its normal and not an issue.............. Gone but not forgotten, 2005 RRS SC first edition, BMW 2010 Z4,TVR Tamora, TVR Cerb, MERC SL 55 AMG, E46 M3, Z4, Jag S type R, Skyline R33 GTR 640 bhp, Evo FQ 400, L322 RR, X5, Lotus Esprit V8 twin turbo, Lotus Elise 135r, Nissan Murano, Honda S2000, 911, Boxster s...and a few more

That should rear "badly mapped V8's smoke" never a puff out of mine unless it was nailed at standstill. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

Not sure mine has had a remap................ Certainly not while I've had it.

Will have to ask for it to be checked when in for a service.

Is this true? ive seen upteen posts saying that its common for them to smoke after a remap...surely they cant all be "bad"? Gone but not forgotten, 2005 RRS SC first edition, BMW 2010 Z4,TVR Tamora, TVR Cerb, MERC SL 55 AMG, E46 M3, Z4, Jag S type R, Skyline R33 GTR 640 bhp, Evo FQ 400, L322 RR, X5, Lotus Esprit V8 twin turbo, Lotus Elise 135r, Nissan Murano, Honda S2000, 911, Boxster s...and a few more

A badly remapped TDV8 will blow up.

With remaps, you are introducing more fuel into the air/fuel ratio, and it will smoke more as a result
