Actuators, turbo hose and now tailgate lock - great week!!

So, interesting week just gone by, the RR decided it obviously wanted some attention.....

Driving down the M3 and dash lights up with fault warnings and we drop into limp mode, pull to the side and recycle through the ignition and all seems fine - except this happens 4 times on the trip!

Reading around on the site and talking to a couple of helpful members problem pointed towards the turbo actuator seizing up and knocking things out - half an hour under the car with a can of WD40 and coat hanger later we were back in business. Easy job for anyone who has the same issue, remove the plastic shields from under the front by the wheel arch. Look up from flat on your back and you can see the actuator arm, needs a torch! On one side mine were really stiff, WD spray and exercise gently with a hanger and there was a big difference.

Sorted I thought!

Drove to check how things felt, with the window down there was now a really loud noise of boost pressure escaping from the same side Sad Sad

Turns out freeing of the actuator and running normal boost pressure had then blown the inter cooler hose, (the 2inch thick one on top of the engine) had an inch long split on the underside. Strapped the split up with tape and sourced a new hose from LR, easy to fit, takes about 2 minutes for anyone who ever has the same problem. Will be replacing the pipe on the other bank to as a preemptive measure, easier than it going miles from home. Think LR should recommend changing these as a service them at 5 years, easy job and costs nothing, would reduce many roadside breakdowns I am sure!

Car now running perfectly with normal performance.

This morning, tried to open the tailgate and - nothing, the switch under the rubber cover was dead. Removed with a large flat head screwdriver, just slides up each side and release the spring clip like removing a side repeater. Cleaned out the switch which was totally corroded up with white muck, now working again and ordered a new switch to fit next week.

In my digging on the actuators I read about cleaning the MAP sensors so while I was poking around today I did that too, they were pretty oily so will be interesting to see if I get any improvement, long drive next week on the motorway so that will be a good test.

Been an interesting week, all these things are easy to fix but really don't think they should be failing on a 5 year old car, not bothered about the cost £30 for a turbo pipe and £20 for the tailgate switch, more the time and effort I have to spend on little things. Having said that I feel I get to know the car a little better each weekend!!

Just wanted to say a big thanks to all the other members who take the time to post their experience on here, really helpful and has got me through what could have been a nightmare week. Smile TDV8 Java Black, Overfinch 22s

Good work Alex! Can you imagine what would have happened if you had taken it to a stealer? Two new turbos and a bill for about 8k no doubt. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Do the actuators stick because you don't use the turbos enough?

Exactly what I was thinking Paddi, would have been a nightmare!

Daz - had done a 100 mile tow with a tonne of boat on the back so been given a good workout on some long hills, then the car had been sat for 3 weeks while I was away on holiday, think being sat must have jammed the actuator, looks like it only takes a slight resistance on movement. TDV8 Java Black, Overfinch 22s

Everytime mine played up was after it had been parked up for long periods. In fairness you can never predict when turbos will play up, my first failed at 8000 miles. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
